All is possible, as long as the analysis paths are open and comprehensible. Ideally presented results would show this, by giving e.g. the size of an investigated group &#8211; is it 10 films or 100? are they from the same year or from the same TV slot, from a similar category, is the data comparable etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">In this blog I often look at female people in the film industry, behind and in front of the camera (cast and crew). The statistics I am drawing up can of course only show trends, no facts, since the data I am using are not standardized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Most of my evaluations are based on publically available lists of casts and crews. It would be ideal to compare films using just one source for all relevant information, but these are rare. So I rely on the data from<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crew-united.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>CREW UNITED<\/em><\/a><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">, the official websites of the films (which in most cases only state the main characters and just a small amount of crew members), the data of\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>IMDb<\/em><\/a><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">, of websites of production companies and such (e.g.: as source of my evaluation of the 2012 \u201eTatort\u201c crime series I only used the ARD-(German TV) Tatort website), as well as information on the films from wikipedia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">As a rule <strong>cast <\/strong>lists don\u2019t differenciate between leading and supporting characters, and the order and number of characters listed quite often don\u2019t seem to follow an understandable system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Regarding the <strong>crew<\/strong> sections I analyse direction, script, producers, camera, sound, set production, costume, make-up, editing and casting, or a portion of them (<em>6-sections-check<\/em> = direction, script, producers, camera, sound and editing). Unfortunately in the data bases mentioned above the listings of crew members are not always complete or identical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">For some sections more than one person in charge is named \u2013 e.g. with producers or in the make-up department \u2013 in others only one person is responsible \u2013 direction, editing, casting etc. \u2013 but even there exceptions are possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Example: Nominations for Best Director, German Film Awards 2013<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">As an <strong>example<\/strong> let us look at the nominations for \u201ebest directing\u201c of the German Film Awards 2013:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Jan Ole Gerster<\/span> <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">for \u00a0OH BOY<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #00adef;\"><strong>Margarethe von Trotta<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">for HANNAH ARENDT<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #00adef;\">Lana Wachowski<\/span>, <\/strong><span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Andy Wachowski, Tom Tykwer<\/span> <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">for CLOUD ATLAS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">On twitter somebody wrote \u201etwo female directors nominated\u201c, which is true of course. But without the references (e.g. how many films in all, how many directors involved) this is not too meaningful, so presenting this information as percentage might make more sense. But there is more than one way of doing the calculation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>Method A<\/strong> &#8211; the mere involvement of women<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> <em>Oh Boy<\/em> would get a 0, <em>Hannah Arendt<\/em> and <em>Cloud Atlas<\/em> both a\u00a0 1.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> Total share of women:<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00adef;\"><strong>66,7 %<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> (in 2 out of 3 films a female director was involved)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>Method B<\/strong> &#8211; die weibliche Alleinverantwortung,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> <em>Oh Boy<\/em> gets a\u00a0 0,\u00a0 <em>Hannah Arendt<\/em> a 1 and <em>Cloud Atlas<\/em> a 0.<\/span><br \/>\nTotal share of women: <span style=\"color: #00adef;\"><strong>33,3 %<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">(in one out of 3 films a female directors was in charge solely)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>Method C<\/strong> \u2013 the 6-sections-check \u2013 looks at the overall percentaged involvement<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> of the 5 named directors 2 were female.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> Total share of women:<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00adef;\"><strong>40 %<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">This is no hair-splitting \u2013 or rather number-splitting \u2013 but as the following chart shows the choses method has a great impact on the resulting statistics.
