Part 4: Cinematographers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Exclusively for WIFT Germany, I\u2019m looking at the list of the 50 Episodes for the Summer Vote (see ARD website) for the 50th anniversary of this Sunday evening crime series with the film women\u2019s magnifying glass. The texts were first published via the social channels of WIFT Germany on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/wift_germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/wiftgermany\/?_rdc=1&amp;_rdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>, then in more detail here. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">TATORT Cinematography &#8211; The Missing Female Gaze <\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Does it make a difference if a man or a woman is cinematographer of a cop drama? <strong>Is the female or male gaze created via the camera lens?<\/strong> And who decides who gets hired for this position? <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The first two questions can be answered with yes and yes respectively. The third answer is not so easy, sometimes the director has to choose from a list of suggestions, sometimes they may bring someone along and sometimes someone is predetermined. It is easier to say who is looking through the TATORT lenses, these are mostly men. That may not be so surprising, given the fact that <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">75%<\/span><strong> of camera graduates at film schools are men<\/strong>, but something else is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Let&#8217;s take the 50 TATORT (Crime Scene, German top cop drama) episodes up for this year\u2018s summer vote. Scenes, here we only find three camerawomen, that&#8217;s 6% of all DoP&#8217;s: <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Christine A. Maier<\/span><\/strong> (BOROWSKI UND DAS MEER and ANGEZ\u00c4HLT) and <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Birgit Gudjonsdottir<\/span><\/strong> (FR\u00dcHST\u00dcCK F\u00dcR IMMER). They get to share a small piece of the birthday cake, &#8211; and they all worked in films directed by women (<strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Sabine Derflinger<\/span><\/strong> twice and <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Claudia Garde<\/span><\/strong> once). The fourth female director, <strong>Christine Hartmann<\/strong> (TODESBR\u00dcCKE) and the <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">46 male directors<\/span> all had men behind the camera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_10en.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11867\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_10en-600x468.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_10en-600x468.png 600w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_10en-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_10en.png 695w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Don\u2018t men want to work with camerawomen or are they simply somehow unable to? Or is it just a problem of films with high ratings? For comparison let&#8217;s look at other episodes of the TATORT series to get further insight: <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">From 2011 to 2020 (first half of the year) there were 360 TATORT premiering episodes (each 88 min). These featured <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>51 female<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">315 male<\/span> directors, as well as <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">30 camerawomen<\/span><\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">328 cameramen<\/span>. In 2015 and 2018 there were <strong>no<\/strong> camerawomen in any of the 77 TATORTs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_11en.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11868\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_11en-600x338.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_11en-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_11en-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_11en-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_11en.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Other than that, the tendency of the mentioned Summer Vote TATORTs is confirmed: Male directors almost never work with female DoP&#8217;s, but female directors do. <strong>More than a quarter of the female directors (<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">27.6%<\/span>) but less than every 20th director (<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">4.1%<\/span><strong>) had a woman behind the lens.<\/strong> No matter if it was a very popular copper team or not. The broadcasters still have a lot of catching up to do, maybe looking at the website of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cinematographinnen.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cinematographinnen \/ Women Cinematographers Network<\/a>, an association of German camerawomen, will be helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_12en.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11869\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_12en-600x338.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_12en-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_12en-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_12en-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SchspIN_Geburtstags-Tatorte_12en.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The proposition that films with camerawomen are also successful was just proven by this year&#8217;s 77th Venice Film Festival, that just took place: the competition included films by 8 female and 11 male directors. <strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">Jasmila \u017dbani\u0107<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong>Julia von Heinz<\/strong><\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">Susanna Nicchiarelli<\/span><\/strong> worked with the camerawomen <strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">Christine A. Maier<\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">Daniela Knapp<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">Crystel Fournier<\/span><\/strong>.
