In addition, since the escalation of Russia&#8217;s years-long war against Ukraine in February 2022, there have been so many news stories of murdered, tortured civilians, raped women, abducted children, that I don&#8217;t want to see any more &#8211; even fictional &#8211; brutal violence against people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Nevertheless, Germany&#8217;s top cop drama TATORT is a good indicator of possible gender imbalances in front of and behind the camera in German television; they are the 90-minute format with the highest budgets, the greatest reputation and the highest measured and extrapolated ratings (which, however, are not without controversy, but that would be a topic for another day). And a statistical view is also possible without having seen TATORTs. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">More Murders: the 33 TATORTs 2021 <\/span><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Director, Writer, DoP, Sound Mixer, Editor, Composer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Always a favourite: Dead Young Women<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Police Crime Statistics for 2020 (Germany)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">And what about the Male Victims?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Targeting Female Detectives<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Dear Decision-Makers<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Recently several people approached me, filmmakers from various departments, regarding TATORTs 2021 and what might be the situation regarding the participation of women in the core departments. Therefore, here and today let&#8217;s look at the annual 6-departments-check:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Director, Writer, DoP, Sound Mixer, Editor, Composer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The <strong>share of female directors<\/strong> is still <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">over 40 %<\/span><\/strong>, which is good news. There were <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">14 female<\/span><\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">19 male directors<\/span>, including one twice: <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Torsten C. Fischer<\/span> for DER TOD DER ANDEREN in Cologne and DER KALTE UND DIE TOTEN in Berlin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">At the same time, however, the <strong>share of female writers<\/strong> is again <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>below 20 %<\/strong><\/span>, which means that <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">four fifths<\/span> <strong>of the writers involved<\/strong> were <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">male<\/span>. <strong>They are the ones who &#8216;invented&#8217; the cases, wrote the stories and developed the events around the investigation teams, some of whom have been solving cases for many years.<\/strong> The question is how much a director can still change in the plot, unless they also wrote the script, were involved in it or had rewriting rights. Their number is surprisingly high. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Four directors were solely responsible for their scripts: <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Tom Bohn<\/span> (HETZJAGD) and <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Martin Eigler<\/span> (DER B\u00d6SE K\u00d6NIG), both in Ludwigshafen. <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Petra L\u00fcschow<\/span><\/strong> (WER Z\u00d6GERT, IST TOT) in Frankfurt and <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Niki Stein<\/span> (MACHT DER FAMILIE) in Hamburg. Co-authors or writers\u2018 duos were <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Katharina Bischof<\/strong> <\/span>with <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Johanna Thalmann<\/span><\/strong> (LUNA FRISST ODER STIRBT) in Frankfurt, <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Dietrich Br\u00fcggemann<\/span> with <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Daniel Bickermann<\/span> (DAS IST UNSER HAUS) in Stuttgart and <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Jan Martin Scharf<\/span> with <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Arne Nolting<\/span> (DER REIZ DES B\u00d6SEN) in Cologne. There was no overlap between the two departments in the other 26 Tatorten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Let\u2018s investigate the script situation a little further: in the first half of 2021 <strong>only <span style=\"color: #01adef;\">two<\/span> out of twenty scripts were written by wom<\/strong>en, <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Elke Schuch<\/span><\/strong> wrote RHYTHM AND LOVE (M\u00fcnster) and <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Katrin B\u00fchling<\/span><\/strong> DIE DRITTE HAUT (Berlin). That&#8217;s ten per cent. By the end of the year, <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">five<\/span><\/strong> female authors were added, which sounds great at first, because after all, there were only 13 crime scenes in the second half of the year. So just under <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">40 %<\/span><\/strong>? Almost. But not really, because of the <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">five<\/span><\/strong> female writers, only <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Petra L\u00fcschow<\/strong><\/span> (WER Z\u00d6GERT, IST TOT. Frankfurt) wrote her TV movie alone. <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Four TATORTs<\/span><\/strong> by women only, <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">two more<\/span><\/strong> with female participation. And on the other hand, <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">twenty-seven TATORTs<\/span> by men and <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">two<\/span><\/strong> more in teams with women. That makes a total of 35. No, of course 33. (In fact, I&#8217;m trying to keep my spirits up a bit while writing because there is so little positive to report on the scripts, unfortunately.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Only two authors wrote more than one TATORT script in 2021: <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Arne Nolting<\/span>, together with <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">David Sandreuter<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Jan Martin Scharf<\/span>, wrote T\u00d6DLICHE FLUT for Hamburg, and with <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Jan Martin Scharf<\/span> DER REIZ DES B\u00d6SEN for Cologne. And <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Johanna Thalmann<\/span><\/strong>, who wrote LUNA FRISST ODER STIRBT with <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Katharina Bischof<\/span><\/strong>, and formed a team with <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Moritz Binder<\/span> for DREAMS in Munich.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">And what was the situation for female filmmakers in other departments? The proportion of <strong>female cinematographers<\/strong> rose <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">above 20 %<\/span><\/strong> for the first time since I started these evaluations in 2011, with six female cinematographers, <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Cornelia Janssen<\/span><\/strong> (HETZJAGD and BLIND DATE), <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Katharina Diessner<\/strong><\/span> (WIE ALEREN AUCH), <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Judith Kaufmann<\/strong><\/span> (BOROWSKI UND DER GUTE MENSCH), <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Julia Daschner<\/span><\/strong> (LUNA FRISST ODER STIRBT), <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Leah Striker<\/span><\/strong> (UND IMMER GEWINT DIE NACHT) and <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Bella Halben<\/strong><\/span> (ALLES KOMMT ZUR\u00dcCK).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">After three zero-years, there is at last <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">one<\/span><\/strong> <strong>female sound mixer<\/strong> in 2021, <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Antje Volkmann<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; with whom I have worked already! She pushes the percentage of women to<strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\"> 5.4 %<\/span><\/strong>, as she was the sound mixer on two Dresden cases: one on her own (UNSICHTBAR) and one together with <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Erich Lutz<\/span> (RETTUNG SO NAH). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Women <strong>edited <span style=\"color: #01adef;\">just under 60 %<\/span> <\/strong>of all TATORTs and took part as <strong>composers<\/strong> in, er,<span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong> 4 %<\/strong><\/span>. The music for the 35 TATORTs was composed by <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">two women<\/span><\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">48 men<\/span>: <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Iva Zabkar<\/span><\/strong>, solely responsible for VERSCHW\u00d6RUNG in Vienna, and <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Jasmin Shakeri<\/span><\/strong> in Bremen (NEUGEBOREN) together with the duo <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Beathoavenz<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">As always, I also did a <strong>roles analysis<\/strong> of the first-named characters and the main cast, i.e. the actors named on the ARD website. Good statistical news: the proportion of women among the <strong>first-named roles<\/strong>, i.e. the respective number one on the cast sheet, is <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">45.5 %<\/span><\/strong>. And &#8211; even more astonishing &#8211; the proportion of women in the <strong>main cast<\/strong> is <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">46.9 %<\/span><\/strong>. So there has been quite a bit of change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">I don&#8217;t know what these roles did and said because I don&#8217;t know the scripts or the films. However, the ARD website provides a short description of the plot for each case, and I would like to conclude with this. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Always a favourite: Dead Young Women<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The presumed favourite corpse group of German crime scriptwriters are the &#8220;young women&#8221;, so probably the 14- to under 25-year-olds. This can be seen again and again in TATORTs and other TV thrillers (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/gb\/2020\/02\/12\/schauspielerinnen-koennen-mehr-als-leichen\/\">TV Cop Dramas &#8211; Actresses can do more than play Victims<\/a>. SchspIN 12.2.2020)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">In four of the thirty-three 2021 TATORTs the murder victim is described as a &#8220;young woman&#8221; (see the synopses on the ARD channel\u2019s website), additionally there are two murdered women aged 18 and 19 who are mentioned by (first) name and profession. The following sentences are the first sentences of the descriptions:\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">After a fire in the basement of the Gerberzentrum, a high-rise housing estate in Dortmund, the charred body of a young woman is found.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The abused body of a young woman is found on a wasteland near a popular club in Kiel.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Alarm in Kiel: During a riot in the forensic clinic, the woman-murderer Kai Korthals manages to escape from security custody. (&#8230;) 2nd paragraph: Then the body of a young woman is found on the shore of a lake.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">A Weekend in Berlin: Partygoers and revelers wander the wintry streets in search of an unforgettable night. A young woman finds a suitable date in the couple Dennis Ziegler and Julia Hoff via a dating app. The next morning, a body is found near Dennis&#8217; flat. Her face is disfigured so that identification seems impossible.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Schoolgirl Jessi (18) has a date. But not at the disco, she sets off for the nearby forest on the outskirts of town. A short time later she is dead.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">After the release party for her debut novel, 19-year-old author Luise Nathan is found dead.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Six<\/strong><\/span> out of 33 cases, that is about <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">20 %<\/span><\/strong>, every fifth TATORT film. In German reality, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bka.de\/DE\/AktuelleInformationen\/StatistikenLagebilder\/PolizeilicheKriminalstatistik\/pks_node.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German police crime statistics for 2020<\/a> &#8211; the one for 2021 has not yet been published &#8211; <strong>girls and women aged 14 to 25 account for only <span style=\"color: #01adef;\">6.6 %<\/span> of all murder victims<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> Another TATORT murder victim was under 30:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Sudden cardiac arrest <strong>at only 29: Anna Schneider collapses dead<\/strong> in broad daylight on the street outside her caf\u00e9.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Another murdered woman, a little older:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Four weeks earlier, the members of the Oase Ostfildern building community moved into their building and already the foundation has to be dug up again because of a leakage problem. An even bigger problem comes to light: <strong>an unidentifiable female corpse<\/strong>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The description on Wikipedia adds that it was <strong>an approximately 40-year-old woman<\/strong>. Two other murdered women are presumed to be a similar age:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>Susanne Elvan<\/strong> met her husband Tarek, a convicted violent criminal, via a pen pal portal during his imprisonment. The wedding took place before his release. When Susanne is <strong>found murdered<\/strong>, Tarek had just been released earlier.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The actress <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Neshe Demir<\/strong> <\/span>was 42 years old at the time of the shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Someone anonymously reports the discovery of a dead body in a desolate residential area in the early hours of the morning. <strong>Jana Gruber<\/strong> has been <strong>assaulted and brutally killed<\/strong> in her house. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the woman worked as a prostitute and that she had a child.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">First &#8220;<em>brutally killed<\/em>&#8220;, shortly afterwards &#8220;<em>a prostitute<\/em>&#8220;. Another classic TV stereotype for murdered women. The actress <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Susi Ramberger<\/strong><\/span> was also 42 years old when the film was shot.<\/p>\n<h2>German Criminal Statistics for 2020<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The following diagram shows <strong>Germany&#8217;s reality<\/strong> concerning the age distribution of murdered women and men. By far the largest group in 2020 were <strong>women aged 60 or older, they accounted for 17.5 % of all murdered women and men<\/strong>.
