Kinofilme sind etwas anderes als Fernsehfilme oder -serien. Um in dieser Kategorie einen ersten Einblick in Bezug auf das Rollenverh\u00e4ltnis von Schauspielerinnen und Schauspielern zu gewinnen werde ich heute zwei Wettbewerbe betrachten: Den Wettbewerb der Berlinale und den Deutschen Filmpreis, konkreter: die Nominierungen in der Rubrik “programmf\u00fcllender Spielfilm”.
\nGerade l\u00e4uft die 63. Berlinale (LINK<\/em><\/a>), das ist eine sch\u00f6ne Zeit zum Filme gucken und Menschen aus der Branche wieder treffen oder neu kennen lernen. Au\u00dferdem ist es meistens kalt, ich mag ja Schnee, nur lieber nicht gleichzeitig mit einem Filmfestival, aber das ist ein anderes Thema.
\nDie diesj\u00e4hrige Wettbewerbsjury, das wurde fast \u00fcberall erw\u00e4hnt, weist eine Frauenmehrheit auf, 4 Frauen<\/span><\/strong> gegen\u00fcber 3 M\u00e4nnern<\/span>, was erfreulich ist aber leider gleichzeitig eher selten f\u00fcr ein internationales A-Festival.
\nUnd wenn wir den Wettbewerb betrachten, da ist alles wie immer,\u00a0 16<\/span> Filme wurden von Regisseuren<\/span> inszeniert, nur 3<\/span><\/strong> von Regisseurinnen<\/span><\/strong>, auch die Mehrheit der Drehb\u00fccher wurde von M\u00e4nnern geschrieben, wie die nachfolgende Tabelle zeigt, dazu zeigt die linke Grafik die Verteilung der weiblichen und m\u00e4nnlichen Hauptrollen, insgesamt sind dies 32<\/strong><\/span> und 43<\/span>, entsprechend ein Verh\u00e4ltnis von 1<\/strong><\/span> zu 1,3<\/span>. Auch hier zeigt sich sich ein leichtes M\u00e4nner\u00fcbergewicht, interessant finde ich aber, dass die Filme mit einer weiblichen Hauptrollen-Mehrheit nicht von den Regisseurinnen inszeniert wurden, auch die B\u00fccher stammen von Autoren. Zufall oder Anlass f\u00fcr Optimismus, n\u00e4mlich dass auch Regisseure \/ Drehbuchautoren anfangen, mehr Geschichten von Frauen zu erz\u00e4hlen?
\nDatengrundlage sind die Hauptrollen, wie sie in den Filmbeschreibungen auf der Seite <\/span>BERLINALE WETTBEWERB 2013<\/em><\/a><\/span>\u00a0 aufgef\u00fchrt sind.<\/span>\"Berlinale13\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Als zweites betrachten wir jetzt noch eine Auswahl deutscher Kinoproduktionen: die Nominierungen zum Deutschen Filmpreis der letzten 3 Jahre, 2010 bis 2012.\u00a0 Der Datenvergleich ist hier etwas ungenauer, denn ich habe keine einheitlichen Angaben gefunden.\u00a0 Auf der Webseite des Deutschen Filmpreises bei der Deutschen Filmakademie (LINK<\/em><\/a>) sind zwar jeweils die Nominierungen erfasst, ihre Produzent\/innen und die Regie, aber nicht der Cast. Deshalb bilden die bei wikipedia f\u00fcr die Filme angegebenen Besetzungslisten die Grundlage der Auswertung. Das kann ungenau sein, denn je nach dem, wer die Besetzung eingegeben hat, kann es zu unterschiedlich ausf\u00fchrlichen Auflistungen kommen. Aber als Tendenz mag dies erst einmal gen\u00fcgen.
\n4 Regisseurinnen <\/strong><\/span>und 14 Regisseure<\/span> sowie 7 Drehbuchautorinnen<\/strong> <\/span>und 19 Drehbuchautoren<\/span> waren an diesen 18 Filmen beteiligt.
\nDie insgesamt <\/span>96 weibliche Rollen<\/strong><\/span> und 161 m\u00e4nnlichen Rollen<\/span> stehen im Verh\u00e4ltnis von 1<\/strong><\/span> zu 1,7<\/span>. Leider habe ich da noch keine Zahlen nur f\u00fcr die Hauptrollen, ich werde versuchen, das noch zu erg\u00e4nzen.
\n<\/span>In jedem Jahr gab es einen oder mehrere “M\u00e4nnerfilme”. 2011 beispielsweise “Der ganz gro\u00dfe Traum” (2011), in dem es um den Beginn von M\u00e4nnerfu\u00dfball in Deutschland Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ging. Ein Lehrer und seine fu\u00dfballspielenden Sch\u00fcler auf einer reinen Jungenschule standen im Mittelpunkt, da ergibt sich die Rollenverteilung von alleine.<\/span>
\n\"Filmpreis_Nom\"<\/a>Vor zwei Wochen hatte ich \u00fcber Theaterklassiker gebloggt –<\/span> LINK<\/em><\/a>– bei zwei Filmen, die in historischen Zeiten spielen, gibt es ein \u00e4hnliches M\u00e4nnerrollen\u00fcbergewicht: “Anonymous” (2012),\u00a0 ein Thriller, der im Gro\u00dfbritannien zur Ende der Regentschaft von Elisabeth I spielt, d.h. um 1600, und nebenbei die Theorie einer altenativen Urheberschaft an\u00a0 Shakespeare’s Werken aufgreift, und “Goethe!” (2011), der 1772 spielt und die Begegnung von Goethe und Charlotte Buff erz\u00e4hlt, welche wiederum zur Vorlage f\u00fcr ” Die Leiden des jungen Werther”\u00a0 wurde.
\nFilme mit einem deutlichen Frauenrollen\u00fcbergewicht gibt es nicht, auch nicht etwa in dem Film “W\u00fcstenblume” (2010), der die Geschichte der Somalierin Waris Dirie erz\u00e4hlt, die als 13-j\u00e4hrige vor Zwangsheirat floh und sp\u00e4ter zu einem Topmodel wurde.<\/span>
\n Nochmal: das sind jetzt nur erste Momentaufnahmen, der Vergleich von Filmen in einer Gruppe, so wie ich letzte Woche die Tatortfolgen 2012 verglich (LINK<\/em><\/a>). Hier die Spielfilme eines Jahrgangs, die f\u00fcr den Filmpreis nominiert waren. Der quantitative Vergleich der Rollenverteilung sagt aber noch gar nichts \u00fcber die Qualit\u00e4t, den Umfang und die Bedeutung der jeweiligen Rollen aus, und ber\u00fccksichtigt auch keine Altersverteilung und anderes mehr. Es ist nur ein Anfang, weiteres wird folgen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nLet’s look at movies<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Cinema productions obviously are different from TV movies or drama series. To get a first impression let’s have a look at two competitons: the Berlinale – Berlin International Film Festival and the German Film Awards, specifically the nominations for best feature film.
\nAt the moment here in Berlin it is the time for the lovely Berlinale, always a good opportunity to watch great movies and meet colleagues or make new contacts. Also, this is usually still that time of year when we have nice snow in Berlin, but that is another matter.
\nThis year’s jury – much talked about – comprises four women<\/strong> <\/span>and three men<\/span>, which is unfortunately unusual for an internationa A-festival.
\nWhat is quite the usual thing though is that of the 19 films in the competition, 16<\/span> were directed by a man, only three<\/span> <\/strong>by a woman. Also the majority of scripts were written by men. This you can see in the first figure, the table on the right side gives the film titles, directors, scriptwriters and leading roles, and the image on the left gives the distribution of those leading roles.\u00a0 32 actresses<\/span> <\/strong>and 43 actors<\/span> – that’s a ratio of 1<\/strong><\/span> to 1,3<\/span> – played in the 19 films. What I find quite interesting is the fact that the films with a larger majority of female leading roles weren’t directed or written by women. A mere coincidence or the hopeful sign that men are starting to tell stories of women?

\n\"Berlinale13\"<\/a>Now looking at the German cinema let’s take the nominations for the German Film Awards (feature films) of the last three years, 2010 to 2012. Methodologically there was a slight problem since the website of the German Film Awards (LINK<\/em><\/a>) only lists the films and their producers and directors, but not the (leading) cast, which would have made it a bit more comparable than taking the casts from the wikipedia-articles on the films, which of course will have been written by different authors in whatever way they chose. But again, it is a start. And hopefully I can add a comparison of just the leading parts at some later point.<\/span>
\n So what do we have?<\/span> 96 female roles<\/strong> <\/span>versus<\/span> 161 male roles<\/span>, that is a ratio of<\/span> 1<\/strong><\/span> to<\/span> 1,7<\/span>. A total of 4 female<\/strong><\/span> and 14 male directors<\/span>, and 7 female<\/strong><\/span> and 19 male writers<\/span> were involved in the 18 nominations.<\/span>
\n\"Filmpreis_Nom\"<\/a>Every year we have one or more “men films”. In 2011 that was “Der ganz gro\u00dfe Traum” (“The ultimate big dream”), a film about the origins of men’s football in Germany at the end of the 19th century, telling the story of a teacher and his pupils in a boys’ school, so quite naturally we would expect a male role majority.<\/span>
\n Two weeks ago I blogged on classical plays in theatre – LINK<\/em><\/span><\/a> – and there is a similar phenomenon with historical films, a very strong male role dominance. Two examples: “Anonymous” (2012), a thriller set in the last years of the reign of Elzabeth I around 1600 and picking up on a theory of an alternative creator of Shakespeare’s writings, and “Goethe!” (2011), dealing with an episode in the life of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the summer of 1772, when he met Charlotte Buff, an encounter, that later led to his novel “Die Leiden des jungen Werther” (“The Sorrows of Young Werther”).
\nOn the other hand, there are no films with a clear majority of female characters. Taking the woman-centered film <\/span>“W\u00fcstenblume” (“Desert Flower”, 2010), that tells the story of Somali Waris Dirie, who fled from a forced marriage at the age of 13 and later became a top model. 5 female and 4 male characters in this cast.<\/span>
\n Once again, theses are just some vague noticable trends, a start to gathering data and statistics, and a comparison of films within a certain context i.e. the nominations of a given year, just like the comparison of episodes in a TV-series – Tatort \/ Crime Scene – that I undertook two weeks ago (LINK<\/em><\/a>). Nothing regarding the quality or importance of characters can be deduced from these figures, obviously nothing on age distribution etc. But these will be topics to be looked into as well in the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
