{"id":4769,"date":"2015-12-23T19:10:36","date_gmt":"2015-12-23T18:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schspin.wordpress.com\/?p=4769"},"modified":"2022-05-28T20:32:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-28T20:32:45","slug":"tatorte-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/gb\/2015\/12\/23\/tatorte-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany\u2019s Top Cop Drama 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Germany\u2019s Top Cop Drama 2015 and a Vision for 2016<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Only two more new TATORT \/ CRIME SCENE (Germany\u2019s top cop drama) will be screened this year, on December 26 and 27. Information on these 90 minute TV movies is already provided on the ARD channel\u2019s website \u2013 main cast and a few crew members, and all this year\u2019s others are available in an archive (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daserste.de\/unterhaltung\/krimi\/tatort\/sendung\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alle F\u00e4lle <\/a>\/ All Cases), so I am able to present <strong>an analysis of the 40 TATORT premieres of 2015<\/strong> today \u2013 <strong>and to make a suggestion for 2016<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The TATORTs 2015 Behind the Camera: Directing, Script and Camera<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It looks like more than one person is filling in the information on the ARD TATORT website, at least what and how information is given for the films varies, sometimes you get only director and script writer, most times DoP and composer as well. The number of cast members differs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Most strikingly, the hiring of <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">female directors of photography<\/span> hit an all time low. <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Not one single woman<\/span> <\/strong>filmed a TATORT. Or to put it the other way around: all 40 TATORTs were filmed from a man\u2019s point of view, or to be precise, from <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">30 men<\/span>\u2019s points of view. Camerawomen do exist, including those with TATORT experience, in 2012 for example 1 in 5 were filmed by a woman.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">The share of women for script writing was also quite low with <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">14 %<\/span> <\/strong>in 2015, this is not a good value genderwise (<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">86 %<\/span> of the plots were written by men), neither as far as employment policies go, women account for roughly <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">40 %<\/span><\/strong> of script writers in the industry (<strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">41,7 %<\/span><\/strong> in the Script Writers\u2019 Guild and <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>36,9 %<\/strong><\/span> in the database of crew united). Some TATORTs were written by teams of two which led to 50 authors for the 40 scripts, but actually it was <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">7<\/span> <\/strong>women and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">36<\/span> men, since some appeared more than once.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">The share of female directors in 2015 was <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>10 %<\/strong><\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">3<\/span><\/strong> women \u2013 <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Claudia Garde<\/span> <\/strong>(twice), <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Dagmar Seume<\/span><\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Nicole Weegmann<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 directed 4 TATORTs. The remaining 36 films were directed by <strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">32<\/span> <\/strong>men.<br \/>\nThe first two graphs show the team positions directing, script and DoP for the years 2011 to 15, on the left grouped by profession, on the right grouped by year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The TATORTs 2015 In Front of the Camera: Female and Male Roles \/ Main Cast<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">We find <strong>an average of 12,5 roles<\/strong> for each of the 40 new TATORTs 2015 on the ARD website (which is not the complete cast of course), on average <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>4,7<\/strong> <\/span>female and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">7,8<\/span> male roles, in a ratio of <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">1,7<\/span>.<br \/>\nThere were two TATORTs with the same number of roles for women and men, and two with more women (<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>6<\/strong><\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">5<\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">3<\/span><\/strong> to <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">2<\/span> respectively).<br \/>\n<strong>The remaining 36 TATORTs had a male characters majority<\/strong>, eleven had at least twice as many male over female parts, five had at least three times as many and one had four times as many males (<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">3<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">12<\/span>).<br \/>\nThe following graph shows the percentage shares of female and male characters for the TATORTs 2011 to 15. Unfortunately the website contained no information on the size of the roles, but the <strong>persistance of the male dominance in the main cast<\/strong> over the five years is significant as it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/tatort15_c_en.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4781\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4781\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/tatort15_c_en.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Tatort15_c_en\" width=\"500\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">More than 60 %<\/span> of the parts were given to men.<\/strong> Year after year. We are oh so used to this.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">If we look at similar pictures for too long we run the risk of getting rather accustomed to them, of taking them as unchangeable truths, &#8211; this is what happened with maps and globes that are northwardly oriented. Of course this is not a truth, just an agreement, a tradition, picturing the earth and everything on it in maps with the North pointing upwards and the South pointing down, with all negative side effects.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What would happen if this were changed<\/strong>, if for example the United Nations would proclaim the year of the southward maps, if they would ask of all member countries to orientate their maps to the south, and have that as the all defining cardinal direction. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">What would happen if a majority of states would then change their official maps etc, for example the weather chart on public television, the global map in the background at a press conference by the government, or the map of public transport in a major city? <strong>This would literally turn the world as we know it upside down.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to ARD\u2019s director of progamme <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Volker Herres<\/span> , <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">20 %<\/span> <\/strong>of the TATORTs shall be directed by women within the next three years. <span style=\"color: #333333;\">No set gender target was announced for the TATORT scripts or for the TATORT look, the DoP position. The gender distribution of the roles, their characterization and the plots were not a topic for discussion yet either as far as I know. But then how is the <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">men\u2019s<\/span> programme TATORT to change into one <strong>for everybody<\/strong>?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The New Year is nearly upon us and so is Christmas. This is a good time for resolutions, wishes and believing in miracles. So:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>What if&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Some call it visionary, some call it setting a target, some call it a challenge.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">I am going to paint a picture. No inversion of the present state, not even a fair compromise like a <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">50<\/span><\/strong>:<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">50<\/span> situation. No, I am keeping this low-key. <strong>I will show you the statistics for 2011-16 if next year the following parameters are met<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The <strong>roles<\/strong>\u2019 gender diversity will reflect the ratio of women and men in the population<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The share of women and men <strong>directors<\/strong> will correspond to the shares for female and male graduates from the film schools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The share of women among <strong>script writers<\/strong> will correspond to their presence in the industry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The ratio of <strong>camera women<\/strong> will correspond to the genderized quota for the Top 108 stock index companies as of Jan 1, 2016, as implemented by law this year (I wrote about this here:<\/span><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/2014\/11\/27\/vorstaende1\/#english\">18 Filmmakers\u2019 Associations: Who is Representing the Members?<\/a>)<span style=\"color: #333333;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It is easier to get used to changes if you can visualize these changes, so therefore I have completed the above used graphs for the upcoming year accordingly. So here are the new \u2013 feasible \u2013 pictures:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Casting<\/strong>: If we take the same number of characters for the main cast in 2016 as was published for 2015, then women would be cast <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">254<\/span> <\/strong>instead of <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">186<\/span> <\/strong>times and men <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">245<\/span> instead of <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">313<\/span> times. Aditional actresses are available. So it&#8217;s <strong>feasible<\/strong>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">In case you are bothered by the fact that in the left graph the blue column in 2016 is slightly taller than the pink one: On Dec. 31, 2014 the female population in Germany was slightly larger than the male. Did you find the gap between the two columns in the five preceding years irritating as well?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Directing<\/strong>: In order to achieve a <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>42 % <\/strong><\/span>share of female directors (this is the female share of film school graduates), <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>17<\/strong> <\/span>of 40 TATORTs would need to be directed by women. This is quite a leap from the <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">4<\/span> <\/strong>female directors in 2015. But there\u2019s a first time for everything. The directors\u2019 guild has <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>132 <\/strong><\/span>female members (in 2014), and in the crew united database <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>323<\/strong><\/span> female directors are officially registered (June 4, 2014), the appeal by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.proquote-regie.de\/regisseurinnen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pro Quote Regie<\/a> has been signed by <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>325<\/strong><\/span> female directors (Dec 22, 2015). So <strong>feasible<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Script<\/strong>: As we hear all the time: there is no such thing as <em>the<\/em> TATORT, no such thing as <em>the<\/em> TATORT plot, no such thing as <em>the<\/em> TATORT characters. However, as a rule, it\u2019s men that devise the films, a ratio of <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">75<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">90 % <\/span>was the rule for the TATORTs 2011-15. What will change when more scripts are written by women? We will be able to find out in 2016, wenn women get <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">40 %<\/span> <\/strong>of the script jobs. On June 4, 2014 there were <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">94<\/span> <\/strong>female scriptwriters officially registered in the crew united database, <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">17<\/span><\/strong> will be needed for the TATORTs 2016. <strong>Feasible<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Director of Photography<\/strong>: As mentioned, 2015 saw <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">no<\/span> <\/strong>camerawoman for a TATORT. Between 2011 and 2014 there had been <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">eight<\/span><\/strong>, filming a total of 18 TATORTs with <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">eight<\/span> <\/strong>female and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">eleven<\/span> male directors. So if <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">four<\/span><\/strong> additional camerawomen are found for 2016 on top of the eight, then the <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">30 %<\/span> <\/strong>quota is reached. Or each of the eight gets to film two TATORTs, then &#8211; for 40 films &#8211; there would even be a camerawomen quota of <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">40 %<\/span><\/strong>. <strong>Feasible<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">On top of that there are the synergetic effect: once the <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">42 %<\/span> <\/strong>female directors are established the <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">30 %<\/span><\/strong> camerawomen won\u2019t be that far away since <strong>female directors work more often with female DoP than their male colleagues<\/strong> do. <strong>Female scriptwriters on the whole write less male dominated plots<\/strong>, so the Vision Cast with more female roles should not be that difficult to reach when there are considerably more female writers at work. The world of the TATORT would not be turned upside down, well, maybe just a little bit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">An actor colleague and sort of older twin brother, <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Til Schweiger<\/span> (we share the same birthday) suggested a while ago that the title music for the TATORTs should be modernized.<br \/>\nMy vision for 2016 is taking this <strong>modernization<\/strong> one step further.
