Im Januar habe ich Neropa<\/strong>, meinen Vorschlag f\u00fcr mehr Geschlechter- und Rollenvielfalt auf Besetzungslisten, vorgestellt (Das Besetzungstool Neropa<\/a>) und seitdem viele Gespr\u00e4che \u00fcber diese Methode gef\u00fchrt. Heute werde ich auf einige Gegenargumente<\/strong> eingehen. Au\u00dferdem wird es ein Preisausschreiben<\/strong> geben.
\nZur Erinnerung: es gibt deutlich mehr M\u00e4nner- als Frauenfiguren im Deutschen Film, im Deutschen Fernsehen. Die Frauenrollen weisen keine \u00e4hnlich breite Streuung in Bezug auf Alter, Beruf, Funktion u.a.m. wie die M\u00e4nnerrollen auf. Das Ziel der Neropa<\/strong> Neutralerollenparit\u00e4t-Methode ist, den Anteil und die Vielfalt von Frauenrollen in einem Film und letztendlich in allen Filmen einer Reihe, einer Produktionsfirma, eines Jahrgangs zu erh\u00f6hen. Und so geht es:<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Neropa_Arbeitsweise\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Was spricht eigentlich gegen Neropa?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

\u201eEs ist doch egal, ob das M\u00e4nner oder Frauen sind, Hauptsache die Story ist spannend und der Film gut gemacht.\u201c<\/span><\/strong>
\nJa eben, wenn es egal ist, ob Rollen M\u00e4nner oder Frauen sind \u2013 dann werden sie im Neuropa-Check zu neutralen Figuren und zu gleichen Teilen mit Frauen und M\u00e4nnern besetzt.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eNein, es ist nicht egal! Es macht sehr wohl einen Unterschied, ob eine Figur ein Mann oder eine Frau ist, das ganze Gef\u00fcge der Figuren \u00e4ndert sich doch damit.\u201c<\/span><\/strong>
\nJa eben. Und gerade deshalb ist es ja so wichtig, den Anteil der Frauenfiguren zu erh\u00f6hen und Erz\u00e4hlgewohnheiten aufzubrechen.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eDas Casting ist nicht das Problem. Dort anzusetzen ist viel zu sp\u00e4t.\u201c<\/span><\/strong>
\nNat\u00fcrlich w\u00e4re es besser, wenn der Neropacheck gemacht wird, sobald ein Drehbuch fertig gestellt oder es von einer Produktionsfirma oder Redaktion angenommen wird. Und noch davor, das hei\u00dft wenn die Autor*innen selber darauf achten, keine unn\u00f6tig m\u00e4nnerdominierten Geschichten zu erz\u00e4hlen. Aber das bedeutet nicht, dass in allen anderen F\u00e4llen sp\u00e4ter nichts mehr unternommen werden sollte.<\/span>
\nDas Sch\u00f6ne am Neropa-Checkist ja gerade, dass er fr\u00fch aber auch noch ganz sp\u00e4t mit potenziellem Erfolg, das bedeutet: mit einer Erh\u00f6hung der Anzahl von Frauenrollen, durchgef\u00fchrt werden kann.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eEs gibt solche Treffen von Regie, Redaktion, Produktion und Casting \u00fcberhaupt nicht, es gibt kein Team, das gemeinsam \u00fcber die Besetzung spricht.\u201c<\/span><\/strong>
\nJa, vermutlich gibt es diese Treffen und Gespr\u00e4che bei den allermeisten Produktionen noch nicht. Aber das hei\u00dft nicht, dass es sie auch nie geben darf. Ver\u00e4nderung geht nicht ohne Ver\u00e4nderung, das kann bedeuten, dass sich beispielsweise an der allgemeinen Genderzusammensetzung der Casts grunds\u00e4tzlich erst etwas \u00e4ndert, wenn in dieses Anliegen Zeit und Energie investiert und neue Wege begangen werden.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eDas verursacht nur unn\u00f6tige Kosten!\u201c
\n<\/span><\/strong>Eigentlich nicht. Die Produktionen sparen sogar Geld wenn sie mehr Frauen als bisher besetzen, denn aktuell werden Frauen schlechter bezahlt als M\u00e4nner (das gleiche gilt auch f\u00fcr Regie und andere Positionen hinter der Kamera). Nat\u00fcrlich soll dieser Zustand schnellstm\u00f6glich ge\u00e4ndert werden, aber bis dahin: spart Geld, besch\u00e4ftigt endlich mehr Frauen! <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eNeropa in der vorgeschlagenen Form durchzuf\u00fchren kostet zu viel Zeit.\u201c<\/span><\/strong>
\nWie lange ist der Drehzeitraum, wie lange die Vorproduktionszeit? Da sollte es wirklich nicht m\u00f6glich sein, dass drei oder vier benannte Verantwortliche erst einzeln und dann gemeinsam \u00fcber die Geschlechter der Rollen im Drehbuch nachdenken?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eKleine zus\u00e4tzliche Rollen wie noch eine Polizistin oder Prostituierte mehr f\u00fchren nicht zu Ver\u00e4nderung oder Rollenvielfalt.\u201c
\n<\/strong>Stimmt. Wobei es bei Neropa nicht darum geht, zus\u00e4tzliche Rollen zu schaffen, sondern einen Teil der Rollen, die im Drehbuch m\u00e4nnlich sind, zu neutralisieren und dann abwechselnd als Frau bzw. Mann zu definieren. Wenn im Drehbuch ein Prostituierter, eine m\u00e4nnliche Prostituierte,\u00a0 ein Stricher steht, dann hat das i.d.R. dramaturgische Gr\u00fcnde und er wird eher nicht neutral werden.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eDas Ziel der Rollenparit\u00e4t ist unrealistisch, in dem dargestellten Umfeld gibt es nun mal mehr M\u00e4nner als Frauen.\u201c
\n<\/strong>Sollte wirklich immer wieder herauskommen, dass es \u00fcberhaupt keine neutralen Rollen gibt, sondern dass die \u00fcberwiegende Anzahl der Rollen M\u00e4nner sein m\u00fcssen \u2013 und das kann hei\u00dfen doppelt, dreifach oder zehnfach mehr M\u00e4nner als Frauen in einem Film \u2013 dann stimmt vielleicht etwas an der Stoffauswahl, mit ,dem dargestellten Umfeld\u2019 nicht. In Deutschland leben 51% Frauen, das sollte sich in den Haupt- und Nebenrollen widerspiegeln.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201eDie M\u00fchlen in der Filmbranche mahlen langsam und alle sind Gewohnheitstiere. So etwas einzuf\u00fchren dauert Jahre.\u201c
\n<\/strong>Es dauert Jahre, wenn wir es nicht eher wollen. Nichts spricht dagegen, Neropa schon heute in der Produktion, die auf Ihrem Schreibtisch liegt, anzuwenden. \u201eSie wollen Geld f\u00fcr Ihr Projekt? Dann lassen Sie uns noch einmal \u00fcber die Geschlechterverteilung Ihrer Rollen sprechen<\/em>.\u201c\"Neropa_pks\"<\/a>\u201eIn meinen Filmen gibt es nie ein M\u00e4nnerrollen\u00fcbergewicht.\u201c<\/strong><\/span>
\nDas ist gut. Es kann in ihnen aber trotzdem neutrale Rollen geben. Und wenn die Neropa-Anwendung bei einzelnen Filmen zu einem Frauenrollen\u00fcbergewicht f\u00fchrt ist das nicht schlimm. Es gibt viele Filme mit 2, 3, 4, 5 oder 10 mal mehr M\u00e4nnerrollen. Da ist es gesamtbetrachtet \u00fcberhaupt nicht verkehrt, auch Filme mit wesentlich mehr Frauenrollen zu haben. Denn diese Rollen tragen zu einer gr\u00f6\u00dferen Frauenfigurenvielfalt in Film und Fernsehen bei.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eWir k\u00f6nnen doch nichts daf\u00fcr, wenn die Filmf\u00f6rderung immer genau solche Filme f\u00f6rdert. Die machen nun mal den meisten Profit an den Kinokassen.\u201c<\/strong><\/span>
\nIch wei\u00df nicht, wie das mit den Kinoerfolgen genau funktioniert, aber da gibt es ja verschiedene Kriterien. Mit wie vielen Kopien startet ein Film, in wie vielen St\u00e4dten \/ Kinos l\u00e4uft er, wie gro\u00df ist das Werbebudget, wer spielt mit und und und. Dass M\u00e4nnerlastigkeit im Cast ein Erfolgsgarant ist wage ich zu bezweifeln.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eDas Publikum \u2013 auch die Frauen! \u2013 wollen lieber M\u00e4nner sehen.\u201c<\/strong><\/span>
\nDas wei\u00df niemand. Sagen k\u00f6nnen wir aktuell doch nur: Das Publikum \u2013 auch die Frauen! \u2013 bekommt mehr M\u00e4nner zu sehen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eDie Schauspieler*innen f\u00fcr die Hauptrollen sind doch vorgegeben, und die sind das Wichtigste, denn die bringen die Einschaltquote. An denen darf nicht ger\u00fcttelt werden.\u201c<\/strong><\/span>
\nIch glaube nicht unbedingt, dass z.B. f\u00fcr einen Film alle 5 Hauptrollen mit ,Promis\u2019 besetzt werden m\u00fcssen. Im Gegenteil, gerade im Windschatten von Publikumsmagneten k\u00f6nnen auch einmal No-Names eine Chance bekommen und dem Publikum Abwechslung bieten. Ganz abgesehen davon: ich halte \u00fcberhaupt nichts von dem Blick der Programmgestaltung auf die Einschaltquoten, aber das ist ein Thema f\u00fcr einen anderen Tag.
\nUnd unabh\u00e4ngig von den Hauptrollen gibt es genug Nebenrollen, die beim Neropa-Check ber\u00fccksichtigt werden k\u00f6nnten. Und auch in Bezug auf die Hauptrollen kann die Frage \u201eMuss das wirklich ein Mann sein?\u201c gestellt werden, es gibt ja auch weibliche ,Promis’<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eNeropa bedeutet einen Eingriff in die k\u00fcnstlerische Freiheit.”<\/strong>
\nJa und Nein. Es werden ja keine Filme verboten oder zensiert. Es ist nur eben so, dass mit Neropa stark m\u00e4nnerlastige B\u00fccher irgendwann nicht mehr so h\u00e4ufig f\u00fcr das \u00f6ffentlich-rechtliche Fernsehen verfilmt werden. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eDer BFFS hat nichts Positives zu Neropa gesagt. Und das ist immerhin die Schauspielergewerkschaft.”<\/strong>
\nTats\u00e4chlich habe ich von einer Reihe von BFFS-Mitgliedern, sowohl Schauspielerinnen als auch Schauspielern, sehr positive R\u00fcckmeldungen bekommen. Als BFFS-Mitglied w\u00fcnsche ich mir nat\u00fcrlich, dass z.B. auf regionalen Stammtischen \u00fcber Wege aus dem Besetzungsungleichgewicht und Vorschl\u00e4ge wie Neropa gesprochen wird. Daf\u00fcr stehe ich jederzeit mit Input zur Verf\u00fcgung. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eDiese Rollen (= <\/strong>die neuen Frauenrollen, die vorher M\u00e4nnerrollen waren) wird keine Schauspielerin haben wollen. Das ist ja wie die Alibifrau sein.”<\/strong>
\nDas wiederum kann ich mir nur schwer vorstellen. Zum einen geschieht das ja auch schon heute mit einzelnen kleineren Rollen. Au\u00dferdem muss aus dem \u00fcberarbeiteten Drehbuch nicht unbedingt zu ersehen sein, welche Rollen infolge von Neropa umgewandelt wurden. Und schlie\u00dflich vermute ich, dass sich jede Schauspielerin erst einmal \u00fcber ein Rollenangebot freut. Ob sie zusagt h\u00e4ngt von einer Reihe von Kriterien ab. Ob ,die Figur war mal m\u00e4nnlich\u2019 dazugeh\u00f6rt wage ich zu bezweifeln. Aber das m\u00fcssen wir wohl abwarten.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Ver\u00e4nderung beginnt mit Ver\u00e4nderung<\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

Den Gro\u00dfteil dieser Argumente habe ich mir ausgedacht. Ein paar habe ich allerdings wirklich zu Neropa oder im Zusammenhang mit anderen Diskussionen \u00fcber die Forderung nach Frauenquoten geh\u00f6rt und entsprechend abgewandelt.
\nWeitere Bedenken, Fragen und auch Zustimmung sind jederzeit willkommen. Lasst uns sprechen. Und es dann einfach mal ausprobieren. Ob in einem Kurz-, Fernseh oder Kinofilm. Oder einfach nur am runden Tisch mit einem Drehbuchentwurf oder in einem Neropa-Workshop. Ver\u00e4nderung beginnt mit Ver\u00e4nderung.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

In January I introduced Neropa<\/strong>, my proposal for more gender balance and diversity in film casts (<\/span>A Casting Tool called Neropa<\/a>). Since then I have spoken to a lot of people about this method. Today I want to respond to some arguments against Neropa. Also there will be a little quiz with the chance to win a lovely prize at the end.<\/span>
\n Just to review, in German film and television productions we see far more male than female characters. Regarding age, profession, function etc. the female roles don\u2019t disperse as widely as the males do. It is the aim of the Neropa<\/strong> neutral roles parity method to raise the share of female roles and their variety in a film, and eventually in all films e.g. of a production company or of a given year. And this is how it is done:<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Neropa_Howto\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Possible Arguments against Neropa<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter if there are male or female characters as long as the plot is exciting and the film well done.\u201d<\/strong><\/span>
\nIndeed, if it doesn\u2019t matter whether there are male or female characters – then they will be defined as neutral by the Neropa check and then consequently cast as female and male roles alternately.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, but it does matter! There is a great difference whether a character is male or female, the whole arrangements of the characters change from there.\u201d
\n<\/strong>Indeed they do. And for that reason it is important to raise the share of female characters and break down old narrative habits.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem is not with the casting, therefore it is much too late to start there.\u201d<\/strong><\/span>
\n Of course it would be better if a Neropa check were undertaken as soon as a script is finished or accepted by a production company or the commissioning editors. Or even earlier still, that is to say that the authors themselves would take care of checking that their stories aren\u2019t told in a too male-biased way. But that does not mean that nothing can be done any more once the projects are about to start.<\/span>
\n That\u2019s the beauty about the Neropa check, it can be applied early but also really late in the process with potential success, i.e. with rasing the number of female characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no such meetings of directors, commissioning editors, producers and casting directors, there is no team that talks about the casting together.\u201d<\/strong><\/span>
\nYes, I suppose so far such meetings and discussions don\u2019t exist yet for most productions. But that does not mean that they must never be established. Changes are not possible without change, – this means for example that fundamental corrections in the overall gender balance of casts may only be achieved if new ground is broken and more time and energy is invested in favour of this aim.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis will only lead to unnecessary costs!\u201c<\/strong><\/span>
\nNot really. Productions will actually save money if they cast more women than before, since at the moment women are paid less than men (the same goes for directors and other positions behind the camera). Of course this is to be changed as soon as possible, but until then: save money, start hiring more women!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo go about Neropa in the proposed form would take up a lot of time.\u201d<\/strong><\/span>
\nHow long does it take to produce a film, how much time is needed for the preliminary phase? Should it really not be possible for three or four responsible persons to individually and then jointly think about the gender of the characters in a script?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dSmall additional characters like a policewoman or a female prostitute won’t lead to changes or role diversity.\u201d<\/strong><\/span>
\nTrue. But it is not the idea behind Neropa to create additional roles but rather neutralize some of the male roles in a script and then define them as women or men. If there is a male prostitute in a film then I assume there will be reasons for that and this part won\u2019t be defined as neutral.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAchieving role parity is unrealistic, in the environment pictured in the film there just are men than women.\u201d<\/span><\/strong>
\nShould it really be the result of Neropa checking that there are no neutral roles at all, and that a big majority for a group of films have to be male – and we are talking of factor 2, 3 or 10 in a film – then maybe there is something wrong with the choice of stories, with the ,pictured environments\u2019. In Germany there is a 51 % share of women, this should be reflected among leading and supporting roles as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe film industry\u2019s mills are grinding very slowly. It would take years to introduce something like this method.\u201d<\/span><\/strong>
\nIt will take years if we don\u2019t want to get it done sooner. There is no reason why Neropa should not be applied in a production the proposal of which is sitting on your desk. \u201cYou want money for your project? Let\u2019s talk about a gender-balanced cast then<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Neropa_pks\"<\/a>\u201cThe casts of my films are never male-biased.\u201c<\/span><\/strong>
\nThat is great. But they may still have neutral roles potentially as well. And if applying the Neropa check will lead to some films have a majority of female roles that won\u2019t be so bad. There are so so many films with 2, 3, 4, 5 or even 10 times more male roles. So on the whole it won\u2019t be wrong to also have films that are strongly female-biased, these roles could contribute to a greater variety of female characters in film and television.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not our fault that exactly these types of films are funded. They are the ones with the most profits at the box offices.\u201c<\/strong><\/span>
\nI don\u2019t know exactly what makes a film successful, there will be a number of criteria. How many copies of the film are available when it starts, in how many cities and cinemas is it screened, how big is the budget for promoting it, who\u2019s in it and and and. However I rather doubt that a male-biased cast guarentees success.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The audience – and that includes the women! – prefer to watch men.\u201d
\n<\/strong>That is something nobody really knows. The only thing that we can safely say at the moment is: the audience – and that includes the women! – gets to see more men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe cast for the leading roles are provided before the casting starts, and they are most important because they secure the ratings. And that is something that can\u2019t be juggled with.\u201c
\n<\/strong>I don\u2019t really believe that e.g. all 5 leads in a film have to be cast with ,celebs\u2019. On the contrary, it\u2019s in the windshadow of crowd pullers that no-names can be given a chance and thus provide the audience with some change. Furthermore, I don\u2019t think that the makers of the programme should focus on the ratings too much, but that is a topic for another day. But letting the leads aside there are enough supporting roles that can bei checked with Neropa. And as far as the leading characters are concerned you can also ask \u201cDoes that really have to be a man?\u201c, we know female ,celebs\u2019 as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNeropa would intervene with artistic freedom.\u201c
\n<\/strong>Yes and no. It\u2019s not that films would be forbidden or censored. It might only happen with Neropa checks that at one point scripts that are male-biased won\u2019t be produced so often for public television any more.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe BFFS have not said anything positive about Neropa. And they are they are the acting union after all.\u201c
\n<\/strong>Actually, a number of BFFS members, actresses and also actors, have commented very positively on Neropa. As a member of BFFS myself I of course hope that the regional monthly meetings will talk about the misery of gender imbalanced casts and also suggestions like Neropa. If needed I can provide input any time.<\/span><\/p>\n

No actress will want to play these characters (<\/span><\/strong>= female roles that were male before Neropa check<\/span>) and be the token woman.
\n<\/span><\/strong>Actually this is something I find difficult to imagine. Even today gender switching is occasionally done for smaller roles. Also, the finished scripts will not reveal which roles have been changed due to Neropa. And finally I would suppose that every actress is happy to receive the offer for a part. If she says yes or no will depend on a number of criteria. I rather doubt that \u201cthe character used to be male\u201c is one of them. But that we will have to see.<\/span><\/p>\n

Changes begin with Change<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Most of these arguments I made up. Some indeed were brought up in context with Neropa \u2013 or in situations where quotas or other forms of greater representation of women were discussed.
\nAny other arguments, thoughts or approvals are always welcome. Let\u2019s talk. And then let\u2019s just try it out. Whether in a short film, a TV movie or a feature. Or in a workshop on Neropa. Changes begin with change.
