{"id":6626,"date":"2017-03-15T23:52:41","date_gmt":"2017-03-15T22:52:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schspin.wordpress.com\/?p=6626"},"modified":"2025-09-12T19:40:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T19:40:27","slug":"pr-und-der-richtiggeschriebene-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/gb\/2017\/03\/15\/pr-und-der-richtiggeschriebene-name\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s all in the Name"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t care what they Write about me as long as they spell my Name right.\u201c<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">I have two first names and one surname, and I know this happy feeling when they are spelt right and put in the right order (lots of people tend to swap the first names) or when my surname is pronounced correctly (not like the English \u201c<em>Steve<\/em>&#8220;!).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Being accurate with names only gets you halfway, because what is the point if they they something inaccurate about you or put words and opinions in your mouth in an interview that you would never say. It is also unpleasant if they get the facts right but leave out the name, if they don\u2019t mention the people involved?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">It seems to me that this happens to women more often than to men, and <strong>this influences the way we see others, our society and the world and everything happening in it<\/strong>. I haven\u2019t evaluated this yet, but spending an hour with an encyclopedia or online with Wikipedia supports this impression. Not only will you find less biographical data on fewer women, but also often see that a woman\u2019s husband or father is mentionend in her article, but she won\u2019t me in theirs. On top of this there is the problematic linguistic phenomen called \u201c<em>Generisches Maskulinum<\/em>\u201d (i.e. a male noun to signify both females and males, when a female noun exists) which is used in languages like German or Spanish and leads to the disappearance of women in texts. An example: The Spanish <em><strong>hermanos<\/strong> <\/em>is both brothers and siblings. A Spanish Wikipedia article on catalan anarchist <strong>Salvador Puig Antich<\/strong>, who had five siblings &#8211; at least three of them sisters, was translated in part for the English and German articles. There he suddenly only\u00a0 had brothers. Fortunately, this has been corrected recently. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Chicken or Egg &#8211; What about Reputation?\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Last Thursday <\/span><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">the Tagesspiegel, a Berlin newspaper, wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tagesspiegel\/status\/839921048984379392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">twitter<\/a>: <em>&#8220;#Facebook-Gr\u00fcnder #Zuckerberg &amp; Gattin erwarten wieder Nachwuchs\u201c<\/em> (#Facebook founder #Zuckerberg &amp; spouse\u00a0 expecting another baby). The headline of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/weltspiegel\/facebook-gruender-mark-zuckerberg-und-frau-erwarten-noch-eine-tochter\/19498370.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">newspaper article<\/a> was similar, it talks of \u201c<em>Mark Zuckerberg und Frau&#8221; (Wife)<\/em>.<\/span><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6629\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/tagesspiegel_zuckerberg-chan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6629\" class=\"wp-image-6629\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/tagesspiegel_zuckerberg-chan.jpg?w=611\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Headline: Mark Zuckerberg and Wife are expecting another Daughter<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Headlines obviously stick out and they are also relevant for search results online. Unfortunately pregnant <strong>Priscilla Chan<\/strong> is not mentioned by name. Why, because the article is really only about her better known husband? Because of limited space? \u201c<em>Zuckerberg and Chan are expecing another daughter<\/em>\u201d would have been possible, <strong>Zuckerberg<\/strong> is quite obvious even without a first name, especially since \u201cFacebook Founder\u201d is mentioned prior to the headline. As far as pregnancies and deliveries are concerned I would have thought that the mothers would be more involved, and I am always a bit surprised when I see birth announcements in newspapers that mention the father first, but that is a topic for another day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Another Tagesspiegel article (by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/toerne-lars\/5265970.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lars von T\u00f6rne<\/a>), also from March 9, announces the new weekly comic strip by <strong>Naomi Fearn<\/strong> about the Berlin political coalition: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/kultur\/comics\/neu-im-tagesspiegel-die-r2g-wg-der-comic-zur-berliner-koalition\/19498446.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>\u201eDie R2G-WG\u201c \u2013 der Comic zur Berliner Koalition<\/em><\/a>. <strong>R2G<\/strong> = red red green, meaning Social Democrats, The Left and The Green Party (this is not the federal government, who are also Berlin based). In Naomi\u2019s setup the heads of the three parties, Michi (Mayor Michael M\u00fcller), Klausi (Klaus Lederer) and Poppi (Ramona Popp) share a flat, together with Der Koalitionsvertrag \/ the coalition agreement which is so big it needs an extra room.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6630\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/naomifearn_r2g-wg_header.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6630\" class=\"wp-image-6630\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/naomifearn_r2g-wg_header.jpg?w=611\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The Header for the new Comic Strip, by kind permission of Naomi Fearn.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>Naomi Fearn<\/strong>, a German \/ US-Amercian comic artist, originally from Stuttgart now living in Berlin, published a weekly newspaper comic strip called <a href=\"http:\/\/zuckerfisch.blogspot.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zuckerfish<\/a> in the Stuttgarter Zeitung from 2000 to 2014. Together with <strong>Marc Seestaedt<\/strong> she founded the vocal duet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stickybiscuits.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sticky Biscuits<\/a> in 2014 (who performed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/2015\/01\/28\/2jahreschspin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2-year birthday party of the blog SchspIN<\/a>!). In the article in question, Naomi is not mentioned in the headline nor in the short description, but she is introduced in detail. When asked about her comic inspirations she names DOONESBURY by <strong>Garry Trudeau<\/strong> (68) which has been published since 1970, POGO by <strong>Walt Kelley<\/strong> (1913-73) published between 1948 and 1975, and the web comic SCANDINAVIA AND THE WORLD by Danish female comic artist <strong>Humon.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/satwcomic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scandinavia and the world<\/a> was not included in the\u00a0 subheading \u201c<strong>Inspired by Doonesbury and Pogo<\/strong>\u201d however. Why? Lars von T\u00f6rne <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SchspIN\/status\/840194938461642752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained when questioned on twitter<\/a>: \u201c<em>limitation nothing to do with gender, but with the reputation of the named<\/em>\u201d. I think reputation is a strange criterion for this, especially since Humon and her comic strip have not only inspired Naomi but are also called \u201c<em>beloved role model<\/em>\u201d.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>Insertion<\/strong>: It always takes me rather long to write my blog tests, I started on this one five days ago. Thus I am all the more pleased to be able to share the following:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"> Lars von T\u00f6rne kept his promise (\u201c<em>will be changed as soon as possible<\/em>\u201d) and<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/kultur\/comics\/neu-im-tagesspiegel-die-r2g-wg-der-comic-zur-berliner-koalition\/19498446.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">changed the subheading<\/a> <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">to <em><strong>Inspired by &#8220;Doonesbury&#8221;, &#8220;Pogo&#8221; and &#8220;Scandinavia and the World&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>. Thank you very much!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">My question remains:\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Are there less reports on women because they are less important \/ less know, or are they less know because there are so few reports about them?<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Give Credit Where It&#8217;s Due<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Being left out and not getting enough recognition is not something confined to women, sometimes even entire professional groups are affected. British illustrator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jabberworks.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sarah McIntyre<\/a> regularly points out <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jabberworks\/status\/608011836005433344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on twitter<\/a> that even in picture books the <strong>illustrators<\/strong> are frequently omitted, and the hashtag <strong>#PicturesMeanBusiness<\/strong> clearly shows that it\u2019s not a question of artists&#8217; vanity but of work and money. Those seen less frequently and lesser known are spoken of less and as a consequence they can not demand as much money as might be appropiate for their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/sarahmcintyre-credit-the-illustrators.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6631\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/sarahmcintyre-credit-the-illustrators.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">From a non-mention it may only be a small step to the stealing of idears, copyright infringements and plagiarism. British illustrator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemmacorrell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gemma Correll<\/a> regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gemmacorrell\/status\/837076274321358848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">twitters about shops<\/a> that offer products using her illustrations without licence, but that is another topic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">In the film industry there are professions that are at times also ignored, in Germany it\u2019s the <strong>casting directors<\/strong> for example who are still fighting to be included in the opening titles of a film. Also affected are the <strong>script writers<\/strong>. This is what <strong>Jan Herchenr\u00f6der<\/strong>, managing director of the German Script Writers\u2019 Union VDD said in an interview in January:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 60px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Before people can get together on a set, a script writer will have worked on average one and a half or even two years on a film, shouldering part of the financial risk and inventing all those scenes, the realization of which will provide people from different film profesisons with an intense period of occupation. (&#8230;) As far as <strong>(non-)credits<\/strong> go, it\u2019s less helpful to suffer in silence than to get legal advice for the contract negotiations to avoid being left out when it\u2019s time for \u201cA film by&#8230;\u201c. Since any satisfactory solution of these questions will depend largely on the market power of the individual author, the VDD will continue to fight for the introduction of minimum standards for the nomination of authors in Germany.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">from Pe<\/span><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">ter Hartig: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.out-takes.de\/index.php\/2017\/die-filmerzaehler-30-jahre-vdd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Die Filmerz\u00e4hler &#8211; 30 Jahre VDD<\/a>. Out-takes 20.1.17<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The VDD still has a long way to go in promoting their cause within the industry, as could be seen at the Berlin Film Festival<strong> Berlinale press conference on January 31<\/strong>. Festival director <strong>Dieter Kosslick<\/strong> spoke about the \u201c<strong>Participation of Women in the Berlinale 2017<\/strong>\u201d in the divisions <strong>directing, camera and production<\/strong>. What about scripts, <strong>why were the authors left out<\/strong>? (In case you are interested, the share of women for scripts among the 18 competition entries was <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>25 %<\/strong><\/span>, four books were written by women, another book had a female and a male author. And this leads to another downside of these Berlinale statstics:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The phrase Kosslick used for this short data survey was: \u201c<strong>you will find a list of all films where women were in charge as director, director of photography or producer<\/strong>\u201d and that sounds like sole responsibility, but actually very often it\u2019s shared. The presse release simply states e.g. \u201cproduction \u2013 competition 14\u201d. Great! Doesn\u2019t it sound like 78 % female producers for the 18 films in competition? Or \u2013 if we add the 5 films outside the competition \u2013 at least 56 %? But actually all that we can deduce from the number 14 is that 14 female producers were involved in those 23 films in one way or the other. And furthermore, I couldn\u2019t even reproduce this number (and so far I have received no answer from the press department of Berlinale who I asked about this). If I evaluate the information on producers for the competition films to be found on the official Berlinale website I get <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>11 female<\/strong> <\/span>and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">49 male producers<\/span>, that\u2019s an <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>18,3 %<\/strong><\/span> female share. By the way, no film had female producers only. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">One other film: last weekend I listened to a film magazine on the radio (Deutschlandradio Kultur), to a radio feature titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deutschlandradiokultur.de\/dokumentarfilm-happy-papa-liebt-ne-juengere-aus-thailand.2168.de.html?dram:article_id=381007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Dad loves a younger woman, from Thailand<\/em><\/a>\u201d by Patrick Wellinski, in which he interviewed director and scriptwriter <strong>Carolin Genreith<\/strong> about her documentary HAPPY, a film about her father and herself, and of course the thai girl-friend <strong>Tukta<\/strong>. At one point I noticed <strong>the absence of Carolin\u2019s mother<\/strong> and I waited to find out what she might have said about her ex-partners new girl-friend, 30 years his junior. But this question was never asked. Maybe she is not alive anymore. Or she simply had been overlooked, forgotten.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The Only Constant is Change<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">We are living In a world where <strong>men get more attention than women<\/strong>.<strong> This is the normalilty in which we all grow up and live in, so we hardly notice it any more.<\/strong> And therefore people sometimes tend to be surprised at the consequences of this imbalance. Surprised at the effects on the self-images of girls and boys, of women and men, on their perception of others, their abilities and the working world. Something quite fitting in this context has just gone round the internet: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.attn.com\/stories\/15518\/creative-sexism-experiment-female-co-worker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He Swapped Email Signatures With a Female Co-Worker, and Learned a Valuable Lesson<\/a>. I was not really surprised by the outcome of the experiment (customers responded more aggressive and less trusting if they thought they were communicating with a woman), however, the boss responding with a defensive attitude certainly was a disappointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">But not everyone will react like he did, on the contrary, <strong>I regularly experiece people being quite open-minded<\/strong> when phenoma like these are brought to their attention (see also my recent blog article <a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/2017\/02\/16\/augen-auf-stereotype-open-eyes\/#english\">Stereotypes \u2013 Open Eyes<\/a>). In a manner of speaking they can learn to spell names the right way, or to write them in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">This morning I noticed this advertisment in a Berlin tube, with the photo of a young woman and a young man on top of a very high building:<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6732\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/ubahnanzeige_dachdeck.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6732\" class=\"wp-image-6732\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/ubahnanzeige_dachdeck.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Advertisment on the tube. The slogans are: &#8220;Be Multitalented instead of a permanent Trainee&#8221;, and &#8220;Apply now and secure your Dream Job &#8220;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The small writing at the top of the sign reads: \u201c<em>If fair pay, promotion prospects and varied tasks are important to you, then maybe becoming a <strong>professional roofer<\/strong> might just be the challenge you are looking for<\/em>.\u201d (bold highlighting by SchspIN). <strong>There you go!<\/strong> Times are changing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The Test is called <em>Bechdel-Wallace Test<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Many have heard of the Bechdel-Wallace Test (three questions regarding a film: Does it have two female characters? Do they talk to each other? And do they talk about something beside a man \/ men?). However, most people still call it Bechdel Test, but that\u2019s not quite right. Comic artist <strong>Alison Bechdel<\/strong> (DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR) introduced these three questions in her comic strip episode <a href=\"http:\/\/dykestowatchoutfor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/The-Rule-cleaned-up.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">THE RULE<\/a> in 1985, indicating <strong>Liz Wallace<\/strong> as the source. In August 2005 Bechdel had it clarified <a href=\"http:\/\/dykestowatchoutfor.com\/the-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on her website<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 90px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Alison would also like to add that she can\u2019t claim credit for the actual \u201crule.\u201d She stole it from a friend, Liz Wallace, whose name is on the marquee in the comic strip, reprinted below.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16042 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alison-Bechdel_The-Rule.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alison-Bechdel_The-Rule.jpg 500w, https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alison-Bechdel_The-Rule-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Bechdel repeated this in several interviews (e.g. in The Independent: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/please-stop-calling-it-the-bechdel-test-says-alison-bechdel-10474730.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Please stop calling it the Bechdel Test, says Alison Bechdel<\/a>) and you can also find it in an entry in <a href=\"http:\/\/geekfeminism.wikia.com\/wiki\/Bechdel-Wallace_test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geek Feminism Wiki<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">To continue calling it the Bechdel Test is a bit like saying \u201c<em>Mark Zuckerberg is expecting another child<\/em>\u201d. It\u2019s no drama, but someone is missing. What reasons could there be to ignore Liz Wallace? Because it\u2019s shorter? Because Bechdel is better known? Because that\u2019s what the test was called from the beginning? <strong>The world is changing and so is language.<\/strong> A law was passed in Germany in 1994, since then spouses don\u2019t need to agree on a common name, and maybe 100 years prior to that wives would be called by the surname as well as the first name of their husbands \u2013 Angela Merkel would probably have been known as <strong>Mrs. Jochen Sauer<\/strong> in those days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">So please only use the term <strong><em>Bechdel-Wallace Test<\/em><\/strong>, everything else would be disrespectful to Liz Wallace, who invented the rule and also to Alison Bechdel, who wants to share the credit.
