One of our active members, Belinde Ruth Stieve, has developed an innovative tool to counterbalance the unequal gender distribution of film characters in the audiovisual industry. Belinde is a German actress from Hamburg, who started researching the situation of women behind and in front of the camera four years ago. We have asked her a few questions to find out more about NEROPA. <\/span><\/p>\n

1.How and when did you come up with the idea of a casting tool?
\n<\/strong>That was 1 1\u20442 years ago. I had been doing my own research for years, both on the situation behind and in front of the camera, and of course I knew about the international findings. In Germany and probably most other countries there is a strong majority of male over female roles in film and television, in regards to both quantity and quality. And then there is this age thing, roles for women start decreasing from age 40, roles for men fifteen years later.<\/em>
\nAll this has a negative impact on the audience, young and old, female and male. With less women on screen, women have less potential characters to identify or contrast with. Less professional diversity of female characters (…)<\/em>

\u00dcberholte Rollenbilder in Film und TV. Die Studie “Audiovisuelle Diversit\u00e4t? Geschlechterdarstellungen in Film und Fernsehen in Deutschland”, initiiert von Dr. Maria Furtw\u00e4ngler, hat f\u00fcr viel Aufmerksamkeit gesorgt. AVIVA-Berlin sprach dar\u00fcber mit Belinde Ruth Stieve, Schauspielerin und Bloggerin, die sich seit vielen Jahren mit dem Thema besch\u00e4ftigt.<\/span>
\nDie Welt ist bunt und vielf\u00e4ltig, die H\u00e4lfte davon sind Frauen. Doch dies, so stellt die Studie “Audiovisuelle Diversit\u00e4t? Geschlechterdarstellungen in Film und Fernsehen in Deutschland” fest, wird nicht abgebildet. \u00dcber 3.000 Stunden TV-Programm aus dem Jahr 2016 und aus \u00fcber 800 deutschsprachigen Kinofilmen aus den letzten sechs Jahren wurden analysiert. Dazu Dr. Maria Furtw\u00e4ngler: “Es ist wichtig zu verstehen, welches Geschlechterbild mit der enormen Wirkungsmacht des Fernsehens und Kinos transportiert wird. In anderen L\u00e4ndern wird schon viel getan, um die Darstellung von Frauen und M\u00e4nnern auf Bildschirm und Leinwand wissenschaftlich aufzuarbeiten.”
