Wir k\u00f6nnen aber auch einfach sagen, ,<em>Ja, mag sein, aber auch Erwachsene k\u00f6nnen noch viel Neues dazulernen<\/em>\u2018.<br \/>\nNehmen wir als Beispiel <strong>Horatio Nelson<\/strong> (1758-1805), der 1797 im Alter von 39 Jahren Admiral wurde und dem einige Monate sp\u00e4ter, beim Angriff auf Santa Cruz de Tenerife, nach einer Schussverletzung der rechte Arm amputiert wurde. Er war Rechtsh\u00e4nder, und lernte danach mit der linken Hand zu schreiben. Nach einiger Zeit war seine neu erlernte linke Handschrift nicht mehr von der urspr\u00fcnglichen rechten Handschrift zu unterscheiden (nach Stephen Kurdsen: \u201eReading Character From Handwriting\u201c).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><strong> Sagen wir also, dass wir unser Leben lang lernen k\u00f6nnen, und unser Leben lang beeindruckbar und beeinflussbar bleiben k\u00f6nnen.<\/strong> Im Guten wie im Schlechten. Und dass nichts f\u00fcr die Ewigkeit ist. Im Schlechten wie im Guten.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Was H\u00e4nschen nicht gelernt hat, kann Hans ja nachholen<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><strong>Dass Film und Fernsehen unsere Sicht und unser Denken beeinflussen k\u00f6nnen ist bekannt, das gleiche gilt auch f\u00fcr B\u00fccher<\/strong>, z.B. jene, mit denen wir in der Schule oder als Erwachsene lernen. F\u00fcr den heutigen Text habe ich ein paar Erwachsenensprachb\u00fccher durch die <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">rosa<\/span>&#8211;<strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">blau<\/span><\/strong>&#8211;<strong><span style=\"color:#00ff00;\">gr\u00fcne<\/span><\/strong> NEROPA-Brille betrachtet.<br \/>\nIm ersten Beispiel geht es um das Thema <strong>Arbeit und Berufe<\/strong> im Englischunterricht f\u00fcr Erwachsene (Reihe Refresh Now, Klettverlag. Zusatzmaterial). NEROPA fragt: <strong>f\u00fcr welchen Beruf ist das Geschlecht wichtig?<\/strong> Spontan fallen mir <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Henker<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Papst<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Ayatollah<\/span> und <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Hebamme<\/span><\/strong> ein, aber diese Berufe sind nicht abgebildet. Sondern:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_einsg.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7721\" style=\"border:1px solid #336699;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_einsg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Kellnerin, Pfarrer, Bauer. Pilot, Soldat, Kapit\u00e4n, Arzt, Gesch\u00e4ftsmann, Polizist, Krankenschwester, <!--more [Weiterlesen - Read On] --> Feuerwehrmann und Richter. Hm. <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">2 Frauen<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">10 M\u00e4nner<\/span>. So etwas muss in einem westeurop\u00e4ischen Land im 21. Jahrhundert eigentlich nicht sein, schon gar nicht, wenn es wie im vorliegenden Fall um die Englische Sprache geht, denn die kennt \u00fcberwiegend <strong>genderneutrale Berufsbezeichnungen<\/strong>: judge, teacher, doctor, director, worker, assistant \u2013 und f\u00fcr andere werden neue Begriffe gefunden, statt 1 policewoman + 1 policeman ist es m\u00f6glich 2 police officers zu sagen, fireman und firewoman werden firefighter.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Wenn tats\u00e4chlich alle 12 Berufe als neutral klassifiziert werden k\u00f6nnen, dann w\u00fcrde die NEROPA-Methode vorschlagen, sie abwechselnd <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">weiblich<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">m\u00e4nnlich<\/span> \u2013 <span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><strong>weiblich<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">m\u00e4nnlich<\/span> zu benennen. Also <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Kellnerin<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Pfarrer<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><strong>B\u00e4uerin<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Pilot<\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Soldatin<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Kapit\u00e4n<\/span> usw. Ich habe einige Figuren ver\u00e4ndert, und bin dabei danach gegangen, was mir mit geringstem digital-zeichnerischem Aufwand \/ mit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gimp<\/a> m\u00f6glich ist. Das Ergebnis zeigt die n\u00e4chste Abbildung im <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">50<\/span><\/strong>:<span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">50<\/span> Verh\u00e4ltnis \u2013 bitte beachten, dass aus der <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Krankenschwester<\/span><\/strong> ein <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Pfleger<\/span> wurde, denn ich hatte vorher aus dem <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">Arzt<\/span> eine <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">\u00c4rztin<\/span><\/strong> gemacht, und wollte nicht alle medizinischen Berufe weiblich haben.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_div.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7722\" style=\"border:1px solid #336699;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_div.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color:#336688;\"> Die Abbildung funktioniert immer noch, die Berufe sind eindeutig zu erkennen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"> Als n\u00e4chster Schritt sollte der <a href=\"http:\/\/neropa.stieve.com\/der-neropa-feinschliff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NEROPA-Feinschliff<\/a> angewandt werden, um eine <strong>gr\u00f6\u00dftm\u00f6gliche Diversit\u00e4t im Rahmen der Geschlechterparit\u00e4t<\/strong> zu erreichen. Also nicht alle gleich gro\u00df zeichnen, gleich dick \/ d\u00fcnn, gleich alt oder mit gleicher Hautfarbe. Au\u00dferdem k\u00f6nnte jemand im Rollstuhl sitzen und jemand anderes schwanger sein.<br \/>\nZum einen wird die Abbildung so abwechslungsreicher und realit\u00e4tsn\u00e4her, und zum anderen l\u00e4dt sie zur Auseinandersetzung ein. Denn worum geht es im Sprachunterricht? Um Sprechen. <em>Was, eine schwangere Richterin? Ein Pfarrer mit Kr\u00fccke? Ein schwarzer Polizist? Eine alte \u00c4rztin?<\/em> Das tr\u00e4gt zur <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterlanguageteaching.com\/esl-articles\/57-teacher-student-talk-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">student talk time<\/a> bei, die heutzutage idealerweise 70 \u2013 80 % des Unterrichts ausmachen soll.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#336688;\">Originell ist \u00fcbrigens, dass auf dem fraglichen \u00dcbungsblatt der Satz steht &#8220;<em>Remind students that jobs and professions, e.g. doctor, teacher, nurse, engineer, pilot, can be male or female<\/em>.\u201c &#8211; Erinnere die Sch\u00fcler\/innen daran, dass Berufe m\u00e4nnlich oder weiblich sein k\u00f6nnen, z.B. doctor (Arzt\/\u00c4rztin), teacher (Lehrer\/in), nurse (Krankenschwester \/ Pfleger), engineer (Ingenieur\/in), pilot (Pilot\/in).<br \/>\n<strong> Leider wurde die Grafikabteilung nicht daran erinnert. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\">In einer anderen Reihe (Next, Hueber Verlag) wird nach<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#336688;\"> \u201e<\/span><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\">dem richtigen Mann&#8221; gesucht.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7742\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_right-man.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7742\" class=\"wp-image-7742\" style=\"border:1px solid #336699;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_right-man.png?w=611\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">1 M 1 F bewerben sich. Gesucht wird &#8220;der richtige Mann f\u00fcr den Job&#8221;. Wie stehen die Chancen?<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Es liegen die Bewerbungen eines Mannes und einer Frau vor, die unterschiedlich qualifiziert sind, aber wenn sowieso nur nach einem Mann gesucht wird ist das eigentlich egal. (Wobei die Annonce neutral mit &#8220;English \/ biology teacher&#8221; &#8211; Englisch- und Biologielehrer\/in &#8211; \u00fcberschrieben ist). Und wieder frage ich: f\u00e4llt so etwas echt niemandem auf, bevor das Buch in Druck geht? Warum nicht \u201e<em>the right person<\/em>\u201c oder \u201e<em>best suited for the job<\/em>\u201c als Titel w\u00e4hlen?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Ein guter Anfang allein reicht nicht<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">In einem anderen Sprachbuch, \u201eJapanisch im Sauseschritt\u201c habe ich gleich mehrere Wunderlichkeiten entdeckt. Das Buch wurde auf Grundlage des englischsprachigen Japanischlehrbuchs &#8220;Japanese for Busy People&#8221; entwickelt, weicht aber teilweise deutlich ab.<br \/>\nZu Beginn des Buches zeigt eine Abbildung das Personal des Buchs. Prima! <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">4 M\u00e4nner<\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">3 Frauen<\/span><\/strong>. Aber die Realit\u00e4t der 30 Lektionstexte sieht anders aus, im Zentrum stehen M\u00e4nner:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr Hayashi stellt Herrn Geenen vor <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr Takano \u00fcberreicht Herrn M\u00e4hner seine Visitenkarte <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr Littbarski will in ein Kaufhaus gehen <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr M\u00e4hner macht einen Kaufhausbummel <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr Littbarski kauft einen Fotoapparat in einem Fotogesch\u00e4ft <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr Takano trifft Herrn Hayashi am Bahnhof Tokyo <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr Littbarski besucht am Sonntag Herrn Takano <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Bei Takanos <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr M\u00e4hner m\u00f6chte ein P\u00e4ckchen nach Hause schicken <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#336699;\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Herr M\u00e4hner und Herr Takano unterhalten sich \u00fcber ihre Pl\u00e4ne f\u00fcr das Wochenende<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">und so weiter und so fort. Insgesamt werden in den 30 Lektionstext\u00fcberschriften <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">46 M\u00e4nner<\/span> und <span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><strong>6 Frauen<\/strong><\/span> genannt. Gr\u00fcnde? Keine Ahnung. Nach allem was ich von Japan wei\u00df nutzen dort auch Frauen Visitenkarten, bekommen Besuch und verreisen, und ja, auch deutsche Frauen arbeiten in Japan. Die englischsprachige Vorlage ist auch unausgeglichen, aber nicht ganz so extrem (<span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">33 M\u00e4nner<\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">14 Frauen<\/span><\/strong>), und Frauen kommen in den Lektionstexten beispielsweise als Gesch\u00e4ftsreisende vor. Das wirkt aber nur gut im Vergleich zur deutschen Ausgabe.<br \/>\nEinige Texte sind in beiden B\u00fcchern \u00e4hnlich, aber nicht ganz, wie die n\u00e4chsten beiden Abbildungen zeigen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\">Es ist \u00fcbrigens nicht so, dass im Sauseschritt-Buch Frauen gar nicht vorkommen, aber sie werden <strong>nicht gleichberechtigt behandelt<\/strong>. In der linken Abbildung geht es um 3 grammatische Formen: machen, gerade dabei sein etwas zu machen, etwas gemacht haben. Ein Mann isst, trinkt und bastelt, eine Frau putzt. Auch bedenklich &#8211; denn da fange ich langsam an, mir Sorgen zu machen \u2013 ist die rechte Abbildung mit der Familie Hoffmann. Was ist mit Frau Hoffmann passiert? (und f\u00e4llt so etwas echt niemandem auf?)<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\">Nicht-bin\u00e4re Anreden<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\">In Hindi gibt es etwas sehr Sch\u00f6nes, die respektvolle Suffixanrede &#8211;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><strong>ji<\/strong>, die f\u00fcr alle Geschlechter dieselbe ist, also Babaji und Mamaji. Im Japanischen ist es \u00e4hnlich, da wird die respektvolle Anrede mit der Endung &#8211;<strong>san<\/strong> gebildet, also Stieve-san oder Dein-Name-san, f\u00fcr M\u00e4nner und f\u00fcr Frauen. Das wird auch im Sauseschritt-Buch gelehrt (wobei ,Fr\u00e4ulein&#8217; etwas antiquiert ist)<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\">:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_san.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7734\" style=\"border:1px solid #336699;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_san.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color:#336688;\">Aber was folgt dann? In der Lektion 8 \u201eBei Takanos\u201c wird von dieser Form leider nicht Gebrauch gemacht. Es wird nicht etwa von Takano-san (Her Takano) im Garten und Takano-san (Frau Takano) im Haus gesprochen, sondern von <em>Takano-san<\/em> im Garten und der <em>Ehefrau von Takano-san<\/em> im Haus. Das gleiche Ph\u00e4nomen wird in einer anderen Lektion wiederholt. (Die Zeichnung finde ich \u00fcbrigens sehr klasse).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><span style=\"color:#336688;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_bei-takanos.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7730\" style=\"border:1px solid #336699;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_bei-takanos.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"592\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Nat\u00fcrlich sind die erw\u00e4hnten Lehrb\u00fccher nicht die einzigen, denen die NEROPA-Methode gut tun w\u00fcrde. Vielleicht kennt Ihr ja aus Schul-, Uni- oder Sprachb\u00fcchern weitere Beispiele. Dann postet sie gerne in den Kommentaren, oder noch besser, <strong>schreibt den Verlagen. Denn es soll sich ja etwas \u00e4ndern.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Wo bitte bleibt das Positive?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\"> Ich habe ja schon die sch\u00f6ne Zeichnung gelobt. Aber es gibt noch mehr. Ein Berufsbeispiel aus einem anderen Sprachbuch (&#8220;Hier! Deutsch f\u00fcr die Integration&#8221;, Klett-Verlag):<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin-berufe1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7743\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin-berufe1.png?w=611\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\"> Und falls Ihr jetzt fragt: \u201e<em>Warum \u00fcberhaupt in Sprachb\u00fcchern NEROPA anwenden? Warum es nicht einfach geschehen lassen<\/em>?\u201c <strong>Weil sich eben von alleine nichts \u00e4ndert<\/strong>. Das Sauseschritt-Buch wird seit Jahrzehnten in dieser Form aufgelegt. Und diese erdr\u00fcckende Einseitigkeit scheint niemanden gro\u00df gest\u00f6rt zu haben. Gleiches gilt f\u00fcr die Abbildung mit den 12 Berufen vom Anfang des Artikels.<br \/>\nVielleicht ist es hilfreich, eine strukturierte Vorgehensweise wie NEROPA anzuwenden &#8211; <strong><span style=\"color:#00ff00;\">Neutrale Rollen<\/span><\/strong> finden und parit\u00e4tisch besetzen \/ definieren \u2013 ohne lange dar\u00fcber nachdenken zu m\u00fcssen, welche Person welches Geschlecht bekommt \u2013 \u201e<em>wollen wir eher eine \u00c4rztin oder eine Gesch\u00e4ftsfrau?<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; sondern das einfach abwechselnd durchf\u00fchren. Den Charme des Zufalls nutzen. Oder vielleicht sogar das Geschlecht der Person optisch und vom Namen her undefiniert lassen. Eine kleine Irritation. Bartwuchs und Rock.<br \/>\n<strong> Die M\u00f6glichkeiten sind grenzenlos.<\/strong> Lebenslanges Lernen, fortdauernde Ver\u00e4nderungen. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#336699;\">Und bitte: mehr Frauen in die Lehrb\u00fccher!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"english\"><\/a><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\"><b>English Version<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">You can teach an Old Dog New Tricks!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">There is this old saying \u201cYou can\u2018t teach an old dog new tricks.\u201c So we could talk about how difficult it is for older people to learn a foreign language, a musical instrument or the fundamental concepts of glacial geomorphology. But instead we could just agree that it is still possible for grown-ups to learn new things. Take <strong>Horatio Nelson<\/strong> (1758-1805) for example, who was appointed admiral in 1797 when 39 years old and who had his right arm amputated a few months later after he received a bullet wound at the battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Nelson was right-handed, and he learned to write with his left hand after the amputation. After a while his new handwriting was indistinguishable from his original right-hand writing (acc. To Stephen Kurdsen: \u201cReading Character from Handwriting\u201c).<br \/>\n<strong>So let\u2018s say that we are able to learn and stay impressionable and influenceable all through our lives.<\/strong> For better or for worse. And that nothing is eternal. For worse and for better. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Learning from Books<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\"><strong>We know that film and television (can) influence our views and our thinking, the same can be said of books<\/strong>, for example of books we use as school-children or grown-up learners. For today\u2018s text I looked at some language books for adult education, through <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">rose<\/span>&#8211;<strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">blue<\/span><\/strong>&#8211;<strong><span style=\"color:#00ff00;\">green<\/span><\/strong>-coloured NEROPA glasses.<br \/>\nThe first example is about <strong>work and jobs<\/strong>, it\u2018s from material for teaching English to adults (from the book series Refresh Now, Klettverlag, additional material). NEROPA asks: <strong>which jobs require a certain\u00a0 gender?<\/strong> Spontaneously, I come up with <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">executioner<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">pope<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">ayatollah<\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">midwife<\/span><\/strong>, but these professions aren\u2018t in the picture:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_einsg.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7721\" style=\"border:1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_einsg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Waitress, priest, farmer, soldier, sailor, doctor, businessman, policeman, nurse, fireman, judge. Hm. <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">2 women<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">10 men<\/span>. This is really unnecessary, in a west European country in the 21st century, especially when it\u2018s about the English language that knows so many <strong>gender neutral job titles<\/strong> \u2013 judge, teacher, doctor, director, worker, assistant \u2013 and comes up with new gender neutral titles for others: 1 policewoman + 1 policeman are 2 police officers, and fireman and firewoman can both be called firefighters.<br \/>\nIf indeed all 12 jobs can be classified as open for women and men, i.e. as gender neutral, then the NEROPA method would suggest to define them <span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><strong>female<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">male<\/span> \u2013 <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">female<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">male<\/span> alternately. So it would picture <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">waitress<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">priest<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><strong>farmer<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">pilot<\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">soldier<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">sailor<\/span> etc. I have changed some of the characters, choosing the ones that were most easily edited. As a result, you see a <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">50<\/span><\/strong>:<span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">50<\/span> distribution in the next image. Note that I changed the <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">female nurse<\/span><\/strong> to a <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">male nurse<\/span>, because I had turned the <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">male doctor<\/span> to a <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">female doctor<\/span><\/strong>, and did not want all medical professions to be depicted by women. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_div.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7722\" style=\"border:1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/jobs_div.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">This image works and can be used for the lessons, all professions are distinguishable. As a next step the <a href=\"http:\/\/neropa.stieve.com\/en\/der-neropa-feinschliff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NEROPA Finetuning<\/a> could be applied, to achieve a <strong>greatest possible diversity within gender parity<\/strong>. So not all professionals should have the same height, the same size, the same age and the same colour of skin. One could be in a wheelchair and another be pregnant.<br \/>\nOn the one hand, the image is then more varied and closer to reality, and on the other hand it provokes discussions. Why do most people learn languages? To be able to speak and communicate. <em>What, a female, pregnant judge? A priest with a crutch? A black police officer? An old female doctor?<\/em> Start a discussion! All part of the so-called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterlanguageteaching.com\/esl-articles\/57-teacher-student-talk-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">student talk time<\/a> which should ideally take up 70 to 80 % of the lesson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">What was quite funny: the teachers\u2018 worksheet accompanying the job lesson said: \u201cRemind students that jobs and professions, e.g. doctor, teacher, nurse, engineer, pilot, can be male or female.\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\"> Unfortunately they forgot to remind the graphics department of that.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">In another textbook (Next, Hueber Verlag) they are looking for \u201cthe right man\u201c:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_right-man.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7742\" style=\"border:1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_right-man.png?w=611\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">They have the applications of a man and a woman who have different qualifications. But if a man is what they want it does not really matter (the job advert is for an \u201cEnglish \/ biology teacher\u201c). And again I ask if really no one noticed this \u201eright man\u201c business before the book went into print? Why not \u201c<em>the right person<\/em>\u201c or \u201c<em>best suited for the job<\/em>\u201c?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">It takes More than a Good Start<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">There\u2018s another language book called \u201eJapanisch im Sauseschritt\u201c where I noticed several weird pages. The book is based on the English book \u201eJapanese for Busy People\u201c, but differs quite a bit.<br \/>\nAt the beginning of the book you see an page with the regular staff for the lessons: <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">4 men<\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">3 women<\/span><\/strong>. But when you look at the main texts in the 30 chapters (in the English book: only 25 chapters), it\u2018s a different story, one with men in the centre (translations by me):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. Hayashi introduces Mr. Geenen<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. Takano presents his business card to Mr. M\u00e4hner<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. Littbarski wants to visit a department store<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. M\u00e4hner goes shopping<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. Littbarski buys a camera in a shop<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. Takano runs into Mr. Hayashi at Tokyo station<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. Littbarski visits Mr. Takano on a Sunday<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">At the Takanos<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. M\u00e4hner wants to send a parcel home<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Mr. M\u00e4hner and Mr. Takano talk about their plans for the weekend<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">This goes on and on. In the 30 introductory texts to the lesson\u2018s texts <span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">46 men<\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">6 women<\/span><\/strong> are mentioned. Why? No idea. After all I\u2018ve heard of Japan, the women use business cards as wel, the have visitors, go on trips, and yes, German women also work in Japan. The English original is also unbalanced, but not quite as bad (<span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">33 men<\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">14 women<\/span><\/strong>). And women appear in the texts also as businesswomen. This is good, when you compare it to the German books. Some texts are similar in both books as you can see in the next two images:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">By the way, it\u2018s not that there are no women in the Sauseschritt-book, <strong>but they are somehow not shown as equals.<\/strong> The left image is about three grammatical forms: do something, be in the process of doing something, and having done something. A man eats, drinks and does some handicraft, the woman cleans. Something else \u2013 and here I start to get worried \u2013 is shown on the right. It\u2018s about the Hoffmann family. Where do they live, are they married or not, what are their jobs? I wonder what happened to Mrs. Hoffmann. She is indirectly mentioned (Hans Hoffmann in Tokyo is married), we know she has three children, but where is she? And what is she doing? (did really nobody notice that she is missing?)<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Non-binary Titles<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">There is a nice way of respectfully addressing people \u2013 both women and women \u2013 in Hindi, it\u2018s with the suffix <strong>-ji<\/strong> that can be used for sexes. The Japanese language knows something similar, there the respectul addressing is done by adding the syllable <strong>-san<\/strong>, both to female and male names. This is something that is taught both in the German Sauseschritt- and in the English Busy-people-books:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">But what happens then? In chapter 8 \u201cAt the Takanos\u201c they forget all about this -san form. So they don\u2018t talk of Takano-san (Mr. Takano) in the garden and Takano-san (Mrs. Takano) in the house. But of Takano-san in the garden and the wife of Takano-son in the house. The same happens in another chapter. (by the way, I like the drawing a lot!) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_bei-takanos.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7730\" style=\"border:1px solid #000000;\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin_bei-takanos.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"518\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">Of course the books I mentioned today are not the only once that could benefit from the NEROPA method. Maybe you know other examples from your school, Uni or adult education times. Then please do write about them in the commentaries, or better still, <strong>write to the publishers. Because what we need is change.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">And how about mentioning something Positive?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">I already praised the lovely drawing. But there is more. Other language books, that are less male biased. Here you see a jobs example from &#8220;Hier! Deutsch f\u00fcr die Integration\u201c &#8211; Here! German for Integration (Klett-Verlag):<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7743\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin-berufe1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7743\" class=\"wp-image-7743\" src=\"https:\/\/schspin.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/schspin-berufe1.png?w=611\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">warehouse clerk, office clerk, nurse, preschool teacher, shop assistant, mechanic, hairdresser, engineer, chef<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">And in case you should ask \u201c<em>Why use NEROPA in this context? Why not just let it happen naturally<\/em>?\u201c <strong>Because change does not happen on its own here<\/strong>. The Sauseschritt book has been around for a long time and has been reissued without changes. And neither the authors nor the publishers seem to notice this imbalance. Neither did the makers of the 12 jobs sheet at the beginning of this article.<br \/>\nMaybe it is helpful to apply the structured approach of NEROPA \u2013 find the <strong><span style=\"color:#00ff00;\">neutral roles<\/span><\/strong> and then define them on par genderwise \u2013 without having to think about which person gets which gender &#8211; &#8220;<em>Do we want a female doctor or a business woman<\/em>?\u201c &#8211; but just do it alternating from the top. Use the charm of coincidence. Or maybe even design and name the people in the pictures in a neutral or androgynous way. Be irritating. How about combining facial hair and skirts.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\"> <strong> Push the limits.<\/strong> Learn as long as you live, continue on changing things.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color:#4d4d4d;\">And please: put more women into the course books!<\/span><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>English Version follows German.
