I think you Forgot How to Play<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Simpy different<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Last saturday, in France in Portugal:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">At <strong>Cannes Film Festival<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>women in film<\/strong><\/span> emphasized the call for change for the industry and society by staging a symbolic piece of action and issuing a statement on the red carpeted stairs leading up to the festival palais.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">And in Lisbon 25-year-old Israeli musician <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Netta<\/strong><\/span> won the <strong>Eurovision Song Contest<\/strong> with her electro pop dance song TOY, which celebrates individualism and is a clear women\u2018s power message in times of #metoo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Open the Festival Doors! &#8211; For Men AND WOMEN<\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>82 women<\/strong><\/span> stood on those Cannes steps \u2013 82, since that is the number of female directors whose films have been invited to the competition of the Festival de Cannes since 1946. <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>82<\/strong><\/span>, as opposed to <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">1,688<\/span> male directors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Cate Blanchett<\/strong><\/span>, Australian actress, founding member of TimesUp and president of this year\u2018s competition jury led the 82 women, and together with French director <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Agn\u00e8s Varda<\/strong><\/span>, who received an honorary golden palm for her oeuvre, read out this declaration:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise. As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these steps today as a symbol of our determination and our commitment to progress. We are writers, we are producers, we are directors, actresses, cinematographers, talent agents, editors, distributors, sales agents and all of us are involved in the cinematic arts.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>And we stand in solidarity with women of all industries.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>We expect our institutions to actively provide parity and transparency in their executive bodies and provide safe environments in which to work.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>We expect our governments to make sure that the laws of equal pay for equal work are upheld.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>We demand that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so they can best reflect the world in which we actually live. A world that allows all of us in front and behind the camera, all of us to thrive shoulder to shoulder with our male colleagues.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>And we acknowlege all of the women and men around the world who are standing for change.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let\u2019s climb.<\/em><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">This sounds a bit like a <strong>preamble<\/strong>, so of course specific measures need to follow, not only at Cannes Festival, but in the film industries of the different countries as well as beyond. The next day, <strong>lively and at times fierce discussions were held on what next steps should be<\/strong>. By the way, I will shortly publish my blog text on the <strong>inclusion rider<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Climbing the Steps did not only get positive reactions, New Zealander <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Marian Evans<\/strong><\/span> writes about some critical comments from highly committed activists in her text (Agn\u00e8s Varda &amp; Cate Blanchett Speak at Cannes, Among 82 Amazing Women). She also offers a video of the event including <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Blanchett<\/strong><\/span>\u2018s English and <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Varda<\/strong><\/span>\u2018s French statements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">50:50 by 2020<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>While French cinema wasn\u2019t shaken by the Weinstein shock wave, it is essential that we move to take concrete action reaching beyond the issue of sexual abuse alone.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>5050\u00d72020 France<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Do you remember <strong>Le Deuxi\u00e8me Regard<\/strong>? It\u2018s an alliance, a network of French women in film, founded in 2013 by <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Delphyne Besse<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Julie Billy<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Vincent<\/strong> <\/span>(refer to my blog texts<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/gb\/2013\/10\/25\/revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vive la Nouvelle R\u00e9volution du\u00a0Cin\u00e9ma!<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/schspin.stieve.com\/gb\/2013\/10\/31\/intwellywood1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interview: Wellywood Woman &amp; Le Deuxi\u00e8me\u00a0Regard<\/a> <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">of Oktocer 2013 for more information).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Le Deuxi\u00e8me Regard were also involved in the action on the steps, and also, recently they started the French 5050&#215;2020 campaign<\/span>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.5050x2020.fr\/en\/cannes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also for Cannes<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">In their compact<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.5050x2020.fr\/docs\/5050x2020-Cannes-Charter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5050&#215;2020 Charter for Parity and Inclusion in Cinema, Audiovisual and Animation Festivals<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">they suggest that film festivals should self-commit to three targets, &#8211; and artistic directors <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Thierry Fr\u00e9mont<\/span> (Filmfestival Cannes), <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Edouard Waintrop<\/span> (Director\u2019s Fortnight)\u00a0 and <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Charles Tesson<\/span> (Critics\u2018 Week) were the first to sign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">The <strong>three keypoints<\/strong> to which the signatories commit in the name of their festivals, concern <strong>Data<\/strong> \/ Compiling statistics according to Gender, <strong>Transparency<\/strong> \/ Making visible the list of members of selection committees and programmers and <strong>Parity<\/strong> \/ transforming the executive bodies of festivals within the current mandate periods.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">5050&#215;2020 want to get other festivals to sign the charter \u2013 only in France, or possibly all over Europe or even globally?<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>The project is primarily concerned with films of female directors, but also with the presentation of women, with stereotypes, role models and identification possibilities.<\/strong> So here, next to cinema and tv, also the music industry should be focussed on. Back to Lisbon, because on the same evening of the Cannes happening, the ESC provided an excellent example, along with a cool song for the next film party or #TimesUp, #MeToo, WIFT or PQ Film event.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">I&#8217;m not your Toy, you stupid Boy!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>I\u2018ve been told so many times that I\u2018m not pretty enough, that I\u2018m not smart enough, I\u2018m not skinny enough to do what I want to do. And that\u2018s it, it\u2018s an empowerment song for everybody, everybody can find something in it.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Netta Barzilai<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Netta<\/strong><\/span>, this year\u2018s ESC winner is a woman who doesn\u2018t meet the usual beauty and body norms, she doesn\u2018t wear her long hair loose in a flowing mane, she makes faces, she\u2018s funny\u00a0 and positive and she has a great vocal range and stage presence. <strong>Netta<\/strong>, who has become an <strong>icon for the LGTB community<\/strong> not only in her homecountry, is a muscian, a singer, and first of all a live performing looping artist. Unfortunately she was not able to show this, as live instruments are not allowed on the ESC stage for whatever reason, and so no sound looper, but instead \u2013 as they explained in an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y-mBXLAaEXQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a> <span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">before the final \u2013 they used the background singers for a similar effect and some light loopings. I didn\u2018t expect to win because I was to avantgarde, I did music with my looper, nobody dd it in Israel before me in the primetime. And then I won, and I didn\u2018t expect that. And when I won I realized I could do something really really special for a lot of people.<br \/>\n<strong>If young Netta had seen me in primetime (tv), young Netta was less unhappy because there was an option, there was somebody else, something else, another example.<\/strong> And that\u2018s it, that is why I am doing what I am doing in this platform. And I am very very happy that I did.\u201c<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">There\u2018s a video by <strong>Eurovision Hub<\/strong> which is quite nice in this context, it\u2018s ESC fans from different countries testing the entries, in this case TOY<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ELRzSb9s-wc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eurovision 2018 Reaction Video<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Poup\u00e9e on a String<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">One of the very few Hebrew lines in Netta\u2018s TOY is \u201eani lo buba\u201c &#8211; I am not a doll. 50 years before her two women had to sing just that \u2013 in the then called Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson \u2013 and they both won. In 1965, 17-year-old <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>France Galle<\/strong> <\/span>with POUP\u00c9E DE CIRE, POUP\u00c9E DE SON \/ wax doll, sound doll (Video b\/w), and in 1967 20-year-old <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Sandie Shaw<\/strong><\/span> with PUPPET ON A STRING (Video b\/w).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Journalist <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Gesa Ufer<\/strong><\/span> recently commented on <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>France Galle<\/strong><\/span>\u2018s chanson (listen to it in German:<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de\/france-gall-poupee-de-cire-poupee-de-son-schluepfriger.1270.de.html?dram:article_id=408063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raunchy Lolli-Pop dressed as a chanson<\/a>&#8220;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>The wax doll is read as a synonym for a virgin, who wants to be melted so she \u201ewon\u2018t be afraid of being near boys any more. And then she will turn into the sound doll, a doll that cries out with pleasure. This line of reading the song is supported by the fact that both the juries of France and Monaco, being the only ones that would understand such allusions, didn\u2018t award a single point to the song. And France Galle, who later called \u201ePoup\u00e9e de cire, poup\u00e9es de son\u201c a silly song, did not want to sing it any more.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">(Sorry, I only found German or French articles on this.) A similar reaction to her own song is reported of <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Sandie Shaw<\/strong><\/span> (taken from<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/detail.php?id=15282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Songfacts<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>Despite the song&#8217;s success, Sandie despised the recording. She later said she hated it &#8220;from the very first oompah to the final bang on the bass drum. I was repelled by its sexist drivel.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Here\u2018s an extract from the song \u2013 which <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Sandie Shaw<\/strong><\/span> performed in a very short, light pink dress:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>I wonder if one day that, you&#8217;ll say that, you care. If you say you love me madly, I&#8217;ll gladly be there, like a puppet on a string. In or out, there is never a doubt, <\/em><em>Just who&#8217;s pulling the strings. I&#8217;m all tied up in you. But where&#8217;s it leading me to?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>But then that&#8217;s in the past, both songs of course are more than half a century old.<\/strong> But then, there\u2018s a more recent song (2016), also called PUPPET ON A STRING that you can hear a lot on the radio. Sung by actress \/ singer <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Jasmin Tabatabai<\/strong><\/span>, who has been actively supporting Pro Quote for years (an organization of female journalists campaigning for parity in chief editor positions in the media, and also the recently founded organisation Pro Quote Film. So obviously I had always thought that her puppet\u2018s story would have a happy ending, e.g. cutting the strings, but I had never really paid attention to the full text (by <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Paula Romy<\/strong><\/span>). Until now. But no, but no, nothing happens. From the first lines: &#8220;<em>What is that look upon your face, A simple mood, or have I fallen from grace? (\u2026) Did I fail in bed, was it something I have said?&#8221;<\/em> via &#8220;<em>Oh stupid me, &#8217;cause you&#8217;re the king, and I&#8217;m your puppet on a string<\/em>\u201c up to the end \u201e<em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Just like your puppet on a string. For end this game you always win. And I&#8217;m y<\/span>our puppet on a string. I&#8217;m your puppet on a string<\/em>.\u201c things remain how they are. Ironic? awkward. (this is the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/234923164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official music video<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Something more agreeable happened 20 years ago at the Birmingham Eurovision Song Contest of 1998 which was won by Israeli singer<span style=\"color: #01adef;\"> <strong>Dana International<\/strong> <\/span>and her song DIVA (Video). Unfortunately I can\u2018t really quote from the text, as I don\u2018t speak Hebrew and online I basically two English versions which are quite contradictory, so I\u2018ll just say that it seems like an empowerment song from a time when this word was not customary, in Germany at least, and also that it was the first time in Eurovision history, that a <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>transsexual woman<\/strong> <\/span>had won (or even participated, although I*m not quite sure of that). Anyway, a diva is not a doll, therefore it\u2018s not really a song for the line-up of doll references, so let\u2018s get back to <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Netta<\/strong><\/span> and TOY.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Hey! I Think You Forgot How to Play<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>Thank you so much for choosing difference. <\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>Thank you so much for accepting differences between us. <\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>Thank you for celebrating diversity.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><strong>Netta<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Indeed, a clear majority of ESC fans had celebrated diversity in a big party across Europe, the winning song had been a favourite of the audiences and invites you to get on the dance floor, so everything should be alright. It\u2018s about fun, isn\u2018t it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Unfortunately not for all, and then there were, as is happening so often on the internet: <strong>hate tweets, threats of violence, bodyshaming, antisemitism, hostility against Israel directed<\/strong> at the winner, and after all, <em>wasn\u2018t Netta victory some kind of fraud, because she really hadn\u2018t been that good, so she should return the award<\/em>. Quite funny the criticism <em>that everybody now knows that harrassment is bad, so why have a song about it.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Of course it doesn\u2018t matter if people like <strong>Netta<\/strong>\u2018s music or not, &#8211; but seriously, what are people thinking who react in such a way when their favourite act didn\u2018t win? Do they write to all the others, telling them that their songs were rubbish?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">I used to live in Bremen in the north of Germany for a while, and there was this saying among men\u2018s football fans: \u201e100 % for Werder (Bremen), 150 % against HSV (Hamburg). Not just a little rivalvry, but hatred? Seriously?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Unfortunately negative emotions like these are part of the internet\u2018s every day culture. Since the latest STAR WARS film came out, THE LAST JEDI, director <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Rian Johnson<\/span> and producer <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Kathleen Kennedy<\/strong><\/span> were being verbally attacked in a really awful way by fans who simply didn\u2018t like the lasted chapter of this SciFi soap. And actor <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Tony Gardner<\/span>, who played the not so nice John in the British tv series LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX, related in an interview the other day, that people would come up to him and got mad at him personally and insulted him, because of the way his character was written and he therefore played it. Crazy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">TOY, the essentially harmless victory at ESC of a 25-year-old musician. And she is now being insulted as a murderess and is made responsible for the politics of the Israeli government? What kind of an approach is that? Just go out and start dissing <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Serena Williams<\/strong><\/span> after each GrandSlam win, Wimbledon 2010 and 2012, French Open 2013, Australian Open 2015, because US president Obama still hadn\u2018t closed the Guantanamo prison camp even though he had promised in 2009 to do so within a year? Or be after director <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\"><strong>Wes Anderson<\/strong><\/span> after his silver bear at Berlinale Film Festival 2018, because of Trump? Or insult footballer <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Alex Popp<\/strong><\/span> at tomorrows cup final and make her responsible for the exhaust fumes skandal at Volkswagen, because they are the jersey sponsor at her club VfL Wolfsburg?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">And then there was the <strong>accusation of cultural appropriation against Netta<\/strong>, because she had been wearing a jacket similar to a kimono, she had loads of maneki neko (waving cats) as props on the stage and there were elements of Korean pop in her music. As far as I know these accusations didn\u2018t come from Japanese or other Asians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">US chat show host <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Trisha Goddard<\/strong><\/span>, defining cultural appropriation as the concept of the adoption of a minority culture by members of the dominant culture\u201c commented on <a style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ONx-QvKAc1Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British morning television<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>Japan is not a minority culture. This young lady is obsessed with Pokemon and all of those with Nintendo. So she was dressed up to look like that. I am not your Toy, Pokemons are a toy, and it\u2018s the metoo, I am not to be played with sexually. It was a bit of fun with an important message. The woman is crazy about Japan. If I was Japanese, if I had anything to do with manufacturing Pokemon and all those games, I would be falling on my knees thanking her.\u201c<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Japanese journalist<span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong> Yuko Suzuki<\/strong> <\/span>added:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>I think it\u2018s not a cultural appropriation at all, it\u2018s quite lovely to see our culture adopted and incorporated in another culture and expressed in such a unique and entertaining way. I thought her performance was really unique and I actually I really enjoyed watching her.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">And <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Julian D\u00f6rr<\/span> wrote in the German newspaper S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung (<a style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/medien\/eurovision-song-contest-schoene-klatsche-fuer-alle-me-too-zweifler-1.3977460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A slap in the face of all who doubt metoo, Netta deservedly wins the ESC<\/a>):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\"><em>This kind of criticism forgets that pop music is always an amalgamation, which does not work without appropriation. Pop is a melting pot, where everything flows together, the kimono and the waving cats, K-pop and the orient, and where the New is created from the convergence of the Old. Netta Barzilai represents exactly this melting pot of individualisms. Her song \u201etoy\u201c is at state of the art \u2013 and a clear message to all that hate women, overweight people and Israel.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">&#8220;<em>Sometimes it\u2018s not about better or worse, but simply about different.<\/em>\u201c (BRS)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Looking at the criticism voiced by <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Salvador Sobral<\/span>, winner of last year\u2018s ESC brings us back to Cannes, to the film industry. He couldn\u2018t stand TOY and called it \u201e<em>terrible<\/em>\u201c (which he can do of course ) and he pointed out again what music and the ESC should be about. Feelings, and meening \u2013 not fastfood music and fireworks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">This is not really very professional and also quite rude, and at the same time strange, because how would he know if there are no other songs with feelings and meaning in the competition if he doesn\u2018t listen to them? But first of all he gives a classical example of possessive prerogative of interpretation (I hope that\u2018s the English term for it). Who is to say that fireworks and feelings exclude one another? (Some years ago I had watched a theatre performance in Japan that included fireworks, which was very touching). Who defines which are the real feelings and that other feelings are less valuable? \u201eWomen can\u2018t do cop films\u201c is a typical prejudice of the film industry, and most women in film will probably to tell one or two stories of what they are being served in terms of \u201ewomen just aren\u2018t so good at this\u201c and \u201ethis is something women simply do worse\u201c. And especially television keeps defining what \u201ewomen\u2018s films\u201c and \u201ewomen\u2018s topics\u201c are. But maybe it\u2018s all just not true? Just like the same old \u201ethis is what the audience wants to see\u201c and \u201ethis is something the audience doesn\u2018t like\u201c is not?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">I just had a look at <span style=\"color: #ed008c;\">Sobral<\/span>\u2018s portuguese ballad, written by his sister <span style=\"color: #01adef;\"><strong>Luisa Sobral<\/strong><\/span>. It is the story of a broken \/ ended love and of a man who can\u2018t accept it. It\u2018s just another pop song, and love is always a big topic with ESC songs, and of course we shouldn\u2018t take the lyrics too literally. But doesn\u2018t it come across as a bit strange that a refusal is interpreted in such a way that the one leaving <strong>doesn\u2018t want to feel<\/strong> passion? Maybe there\u2018s just no passion left <strong>for him \/ the singer<\/strong>? Hm, not quite the potential for a hymn to the #nomeansno campaign&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">I beg you to return, to want me again, I know that one can\u2019t love alone. Maybe slowly you might learn again. If your heart doesn\u2019t wish to give in, Not to feel passion, not to suffer, Without making plans of what will come after, My heart can love for the both of us.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">Netta reacted in a gracious and masterul (or should I say mistressful?) way to <strong>Sobral<\/strong>\u2018s criticism by emphasizing diversity, donning a snapshot of her together with <strong><span style=\"color: #01adef;\">Elenie Foureira<\/span> <\/strong>who ended up in 2nd place of the competition: <a style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NettaBarzilai\/status\/994317025777512448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click<\/a> and <a style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/foureira_eleni\/status\/995480453623832578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click<\/a>.
