Heute geht es um den Frauenanteil in den Filmcrews von 12 Kinoproduktionen, in den 10 Bereichen Regie, Drehbuch, Produzent\/in, Kamera, Ton, Szenenbild, Kost\u00fcmbild, Maskenbild, Schnitt und Besetzung.
\n<\/span>Eine Gegen\u00fcberstellung der sechs erfolgreichsten Filme 2012 mit den sechs Nominierungen (Bester Spielfilm) zum Deutschen Filmpreis 2013 zeigt deutliche Unterschiede.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s text is about the crews of 12 film productions from 2012 or rather the share of women in 10 departments: direction, script, producer, cinematography, sound, set production, costume design, make up design, editing and casting.
\nA comparison of the crews from the 6 top grossing films 2012 with the 6 nominations for German Film Awards 2013 \/ Best Film shows\u00a0 considerable differences.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Morgen (Freitag 22.3.) werden die Nominierungen f\u00fcr den DEUTSCHEN FILMPREIS 2013<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 bekannt gegeben. F\u00fcr alle, die schon immer mal wissen wollten, wie diese zustande kommen, hier der Ablauf:
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Eine 33-k\u00f6pfige Vorauswahlkommission bestimmt aus 111 angemeldeten deutschen Kinofilmen des letzten Jahres 46 Filme <\/strong>(LINK<\/em><\/a>)<\/span>. Alle Mitglieder der Deutschen Filmakademie k\u00f6nnen anschlie\u00dfend jeweils f\u00fcr ihr Gewerk abstimmen. Das hei\u00dft z.B., dass alle Kameraleute, die Mitglied der Filmakademie sind, aus den 46 Filmen die ihrer Meinung nach beste Kameraleistung ausw\u00e4hlen.
\nAus den Abstimmungsergebnissen werden dann die Nominierten-Listen<\/strong> f\u00fcr alle Kategorien erstellt. Und aus den Nominierungen werden dann die Preistr\u00e4ger\/innen gew\u00e4hlt\u00a0 (LINK<\/em><\/a>)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Daneben gibt es einen Publikumspreis<\/strong>, \u00fcber dessen Vergabe alle die wollen in einer Onlineabstimmung \u00fcber die zw\u00f6lf publikums\u00adst\u00e4rksten deutschen Filmen entscheiden. 2012 waren es diese Filme:<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbildung A<\/strong> zeigt den Frauenanteil in den zehn eingangs genannten Gewerken Regie, Drehbuch, Produzent\/in, Kamera, Ton, Szenenbild, Kost\u00fcmbild, Maskenbild, Schnitt und Besetzung (mehr zur statistischen Auswertung hier:<\/span> METHODE<\/em><\/a>).<\/span>\"Crew_Top12_2012\"<\/a>In drei Gewerken – Kamera, Ton, Schnitt \u2013 gab es \u00fcberhaupt keine Frauen in verantwortlicher Position. In drei weiteren – Regie, Buch, Produktion \u2013 lag der M\u00e4nneranteil<\/span> bei \u00fcber 80 %. Lediglich bei Kost\u00fcm, Maske und Besetzung gab es ein Frauen\u00fcbergewicht<\/span> <\/strong>(85, 95 bzw. 70 %).<\/span><\/p>\n

Insgesamt sind etwas weniger als halb so viele weibliche wie m\u00e4nnliche Filmschaffende aufgef\u00fchrt, 54<\/span><\/strong> gegen\u00fcber 118<\/span>. Wobei das nicht bedeutet, dass es 172 verschiedene Menschen sind. Manche waren an mehreren Produktionen beteiligt, z.B. die Maskenbildnerinnen Charlotte Chang (3), Andrea Pirchner (2) und Mareike Sa\u00df (2), der Kameramann Bernhard Jasper (3) und der Besetzer Emrah Ertem (3). Mehrere arbeiteten in den Bereichen Regie und Drehbuch, bzw. zus\u00e4tzlich noch als beteiligter Produzent (oder Schauspieler, was in diese Statistik nat\u00fcrlich nicht eingeht). Und dann gibt es noch die Kombination mehrere Gewerke \/ mehrere Filme, \u00a0Til Schweiger \u00fcbernahm in zwei Filmen jeweils 3 bzw. 4 Gewerke (mit-) und brachte es so auf 7 Nennungen.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

So sah es bei den zw\u00f6lf erfolgreichsten deutschen Kinofilmen 2012 aus.
\nAbbildung B<\/strong> wiederum basiert auf den Daten zw\u00f6lf anderer Filme, und zwar den Nominierungen zum Deutschen Filmpreis 2011 und 2012 in der Kategorie Bester Spielfilm (das sind also Filme, die 2010 und 2011 produziert wurden, insofern nicht direkt mit den Top 12 von 2012 vergleichbar):<\/span>\"Crew_Lola_2011_12\"<\/a>Hier ist das Verh\u00e4ltnis der weiblichen und m\u00e4nnlichen Filmschaffenden in den zehn Gewerken zwar auch nicht ausgeglichen, aber statt 1<\/span><\/strong>:2,2<\/span> liegt es jetzt nur noch bei 1<\/strong><\/span>:1,4<\/span> (63<\/strong><\/span> gegen\u00fcber 85<\/span>). Die Kategorien Kost\u00fcm, Maske und Besetzung weisen noch h\u00f6here\u00a0Frauenanteile <\/strong> <\/span>auf als bei den Top 12 (100, 95 und 85 %), und am anderen Ende arbeiteten sowohl im Schnitt (4) auch als auch an der Kamera (3) Frauen, so dass nur noch der Ton als 100 %-ige M\u00e4nnerdom\u00e4ne<\/span> blieb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Den 6-Gewerke-Check<\/b> besteht lediglich einer der zw\u00f6lf Filme nicht: Goethe!<\/i> (Regie Philipp St\u00f6lzl).<\/span><\/p>\n

Zum Vergleich: Ich hatte den 6-Gewerke-Check<\/i> auch f\u00fcr die Wettbewerbsfilme der Berlinale 2013 (LINK<\/em><\/a>)<\/span> und die Oscar-Nominierungen 2013 in der Kategorie Bester Film (LINK<\/a>)<\/span> durchgef\u00fchrt. Bei der Berlinale bestanden 15 von 19 Filmen, bei den Oscars 7 von 9\u00a0 Filmen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Um einmal eine Hypothese in den Raum zu stellen: K\u00f6nnte es sein, dass in den kommerzielleren \/ kommerziell erfolgreicheren Filmen weniger Frauen in den M\u00e4nnerdom\u00e4ne-Gewerken mitarbeiten als beispielsweise in Arthouse Produktionen?
\nUnd falls das so ist, woran k\u00f6nnte es liegen?<\/span><\/p>\n

Ich werde an dieser Stelle sobald wie wie m\u00f6glich den 6-Gewerke-Check<\/em> f\u00fcr die morgen bekannt werdenden sechs Lola-Nominierungen (Bester Spielfilm) – einem Check der Top 6 der 2012er Kassenerfolge gegen\u00fcberstellt – nachtragen.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Und hier ist sie nun, die Gegen\u00fcberstellung der Top 6 Kassenschlager 2012 mit den 6 Filmpreis-Nominierungen 2013 in der Kategorie \u201eBester Spielfilm\u201c. Abbildung C zeigt den 6-Gewerke-Check, allerdings geht diesmal die y-Achse nur bis 70 %.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n Die Wand<\/span>\"Top6Nom\"<\/a>Abbildung C best\u00e4tigt meine Vermutung: der Anteil der weiblichen Filmschaffenden ist bei den kommerziellen Top 6 wesentlich niedriger als bei den 6 Nominierungen. Bei den Top 6 Filmen arbeitet keine Frauen hauptverantwortlich in den Bereichen Kamera, Ton und Schnitt, bei den 6 Nominierungen nur im Ton nicht, der Prozentsatz im Schnitt liegt bei \u00fcber 60 %.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aber das ist nat\u00fcrlich nur eine Momentaufnahme. Zu ber\u00fccksichtigen ist au\u00dferdem noch der jeweilige Kinostart. Der erfolgreichste Film 2012 T\u00fcrkisch f\u00fcr Anf\u00e4nger<\/em> w\u00fcrde nicht auf diesem Platz stehen, wenn er statt im M\u00e4rz erst im November in die Kinos gekommen w\u00e4re. Der Film Hannah Arendt kam erst im Januar 2013 in die Kinos, weist also 2012 logischerweise noch kein Kinopublikum auf.<\/span><\/p>\n

Von den Top 6 wurde kein Film 2013 oder 2012 f\u00fcr den Besten Spielfilm nominiert.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unter den Top 6 gibt es zwei Filme, in denen in den sechs Gewerken keine Frau genannt wird – Russendisko<\/em> und Schutzengel<\/em>. Bei den 6 Nominierungen gibt es einen – Quellen des Lebens<\/em>. Bei Hannah Arendt<\/em> waren f\u00fcr 5 der 6 Gewerke Frauen verantwortlich. Hier lag auch die Bildgestaltung bei einer Kamerafrau – Caroline Champetier. Der Prozentsatz in der Kategorie liegt aber nicht bei 16,7 weil f\u00fcr Die Wand<\/em> bei neun Kameraleute*<\/strong> genannt sind (LINK<\/em><\/a>), was wiederum durch die lange Drehzeit erkl\u00e4rt wird (Februar 2010 bis Januar 2011 in mehreren Bl\u00f6cken).<\/span><\/p>\n

Was sagt uns das nun? Zumindest, dass es nicht an Qualit\u00e4tskriterien liegen wird, wenn der Anteil hauptverantwortlicher weiblicher Filmschaffender in einer Filmproduktion gegen Null geht. Wobei nat\u00fcrlich immer noch die angek\u00fcndigte Auswertung der Frauen- und M\u00e4nneranteile in den einzelnen Berufsgruppen aussteht.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCREW COUNT – German Top Grossing Films 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tomorrow (Friday March 22) the nominations for the German Film Awards <\/a>(with the Lola as price statuettes) will be announced. For all of you who want to know how they come about, here\u2019s a few words on the process:<\/span><\/p>\n

A pre-selection committee with 33 members determines 46 films<\/b> (LINK<\/em><\/a>)\u00a0 out of 111 registered german (cinema) productions of the previous year, in this case 2012. All members of the German Film Academy can then vote within their section. E.g. all cinematographers who are members can vote on the best camera achievement in the 46 films.
\nThese votes result in the nomination lists<\/b> for all categories (LINK<\/em><\/a>). And the final vote on the nominations will determine the prize winners.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore the public can take part in an online voting on the twelve top grossing films for the audience award<\/strong>. This year these are the candidates:<\/span><\/p>\n

Figure A<\/strong> shows the share of women in the earlier mentioned ten categories direction, script, producer, cinematography, sound, set production, costume design, make up design, editing and casting (for more information on the statistical evaluation check METHODE<\/em><\/a>).<\/span>\"Crew_Top12_2012\"<\/a>In three sections \u2013 cinematography, sound, editing \u2013 there are no women in charge. In three others \u2013 direction, script, producer \u2013 the share of men<\/span> is over 80 %. Only in the departments costume and make-up design and casting there is a strong female predominance<\/span> <\/strong>(85, 95 and 70 %\u00a0 respectively).<\/span><\/p>\n

On the whole there are less than half as many women as men to be found, 54<\/strong><\/span> compared to 118<\/span>. This does not mean that there were 172 different people involved in these productions. Some worked in more than one film, e.g. make-up artists Charlotte Chang (3), Andrea Pirchner (2) and Mareike Sa\u00df (2), Cinematographer Bernhard Jasper (3) and Casting Direcotr Emrah Ertem (3). Some worked as director and writer, sometimes additionally as producer (and even as actor, which is something these statistics don\u2019t cover). \u00a0And then there is also a combination of several compartments in different films united in one person: \u00a0Til Schweiger is stated for 3 resp. 4 departments in two films, which is a total of 7 mentions.<\/span><\/p>\n

So this was the situation for the twelve top grossing films 2012. <\/span>
\n Figure B<\/strong> on the other hand is based on twelve other films, the nominations for German Film Awards 2011 and 2012 in the category Best Film. (So these are films that were produced in 2010 and 2011, and are therefore not directly comparable to the top grossing films of 2012).<\/span>\"Crew_Lola_2011_12\"<\/a>Here the proportion of female and male people involved in the films was also imbalanced, but instead of the 1<\/strong><\/span>:2,2<\/span> \u00a0ratio we find one of 1<\/strong><\/span>:1,4<\/span> (63<\/strong><\/span> vs 85<\/span>). \u00a0 The categories costume and make-up design and casting show very high female shares<\/b> <\/span>(100, 95 and 85 %), on the other end women worked in editing (4) and cinematography (3), so it is only the sound department being completely male dominated<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only one film fails the 6-sections-check<\/strong>: Goethe!<\/i> (Regie Philipp St\u00f6lzl).<\/span><\/p>\n

Just for comparison: the 6-sections-check<\/em> was also undertaken for the films in competition at the 2013 Berlinale (LINK<\/em><\/a>) and the Oscar nominations 2013 in the category Best Film (<\/span>LINK<\/a><\/em>). 15 out of 19 Berlinale films passed it, along with 7 out of 9 Oscar nominated films.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s propose a hypothesis: Could it be that the more commercial \/ more commercially successful films employ less women than e.g. Arthouse productions? And if this is so, what might be the reasons?<\/span><\/p>\n

I will supplement a \u00a06-sections-check<\/em> for the six Lola-nominations that will be announced tomorrow, and will contrast them with a check for the six top grossing films of 2012 right here.<\/span><\/p>\n

So now we can have a look at the six top grossing films 2012 and the six nominations for the German Filmawards 2013 in the category \u201eBest Film\u201c. Figure C shows the 6-Sections-Check, please note that the Y-Axis only goes as far as 70 %.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Top6Nom\"<\/a>Apparently my assuption that the share of women in the commercial top 6 would be lower than in the 6 nominations has been strongly confirmed. For the top 6 no woman was responsible in the sections cinematography, sound and edition, for the 6 nominations there is only a female void in the sound section, the percentage for editing is above 60 %.<\/span><\/p>\n

But of course this is only a snap shot. For a comparison we also have to consider the theatrical release dates. Had the most successful film in 2012 \u2013 T\u00fcrkisch f\u00fcr Anf\u00e4ger \u2013 opened in November instead of in March, it would not be the number one. The film Hannah Arendt opened in January 2013, so obviously there are no box-office sales in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n

None of the Top 6 films were nominated in 2013 or 2012 for Best Picture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the Top 6 films there are two without women in the six sections: Russendisko and Schutzengel. Among the 6 nominations it is one – Quellen des Lebens. In the production Hannah Arendt 5 of the 6 sections were headed by women.. It also had a female cinematographer – Caroline Champetier \u2013 but the percentage in this section is not 16,7 because Die Wand names nine cinematographers*<\/b> (LINK<\/em><\/a>) , due to the long time of shooting (several periods between February 2010 and January 2011).<\/span><\/p>\n

So, what do we take from that? Well, it could show that it is not a question of lacking female talent, when a production does not employ <\/span>any woman in a position of responsibility. I am still planning of course to get the statistics of women and men working professionally in the different areas of film production in Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n
