Gedanken einer Schauspielerin

Die Zukunft hat begonnen – The Future is now

English Version follows German.

Heute geht es um die Besetzung des Social Spots A MESSAGE FROM THE FUTURE, den Molle&Korn  Moving Images for Social Change für die im Jahr 2000 gegründete Stiftung EVZ Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft produziert haben. Und um neutrale Rollen.

Wer weiß, was die Zukunft bringt

Vielen Dank.

English Version

The Future is Now

Today‘s text describes the casting process of A MESSAGE FROM THE FUTURE,  a social spot for the German EVZ Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (Stiftung EVZ), produced by Molle&Korn – Moving Images for Social Change (Berlin).  And it discusses neutral roles.

Who knows what the Future may bring

As you may know, a few weeks ago the NEROPA website had its relaunch. Here’s a quote from the subpage on Case Studies:

These scripts probably don‘t exist yet, but who knows what the future may bring and in any case it‘s worth a try. The roles will be defined as persons with certain characteristics. Then the search for the best cast can begin, with gender being a secondary issue.
Especially the science fiction genre could offer freedom and a future beyond binary gender roles and male dominance in positions of power – something that can be written without the need for immense fantasy.

When I introduced NEROPA in London at the international WFTV UK Making a Difference Conference in May this year, I had no idea that this vision could become reality so soon.

Casting for a Social Spot

Life however can be full of surprises! On my return from London I was invited to audition for the already mentioned social spot, for the leading character Dr. Rellüm no less. In the script Dr. Rellüm  had no gender and was only described as an archaeologist and by he/she or him/her.
Of course I gladly accepted the invitation, because of the role and work of the EVZ Foundation, because of the previous work of Molle&Korn and because I really liked the funny script.

As a side effect, auditioning for an archaelogist was also attractive to me, as this is a profession I‘ve been wanting to play, – and one which I‘ve used as an example for NEROPA in the past:

Just imagine if a judge, a barrister or a computer engineer would be marked green for neutral role (arguments like ,women don’t do these jobs‘ aren’t really substantiated!) – so suddenly we get to see a female plumber and a female archaeologist in a small supporting role, not in the centre of the story, but clearly visible.

According to Anna Moll, when pitching for the spot they left it open whether the lead would be a woman or a man, and the EVZ Foundation went along with that. The only requirement was that either Dr. Rellüm or the reporter would be played by a native speaker and that both characters would come from different ethnical backgrounds.

So here we have it, an all-roles-are-neutral script, at least as far as the speaking roles go. The subsequent fine-tuning which would lead to greater diversity was also part of the picture.

Consequently actresses and actors were invited to audition for Dr. Rellüm, native as well as ESL (English as a Second Language) speakers – and Molle&Korn picked the best suited. Two native German actresses were asked to re-audtion which meant that the reporter (Luap) opposite Dr. Rellüm would be male. A number of native speakers were invited for the recall, and the rest is history…

Change the Story

Yes, I am aware that this is only a 3 minute clip, with just two speaking roles and that the majority of extras are male. But nonetheless the casting process of this spot gives cause for optimism. And I am looking forward to the first (?) feature film with a similar approach: declare all roles as neutral, cast them on gender parity and afterwards look out for greatest possible diversity.
A MESSAGE FROM THE FUTURE was first shown at an event of the EVZ Foundation Remembrace, Responsibility and Future last week and went online shortly after that. Watch the clip, comment, discuss and share it with friends and colleagues, like it on facebook, talk about the message and change the story. Thank you very much.
