Gedanken einer Schauspielerin

Schauspiel ist mehr als Text und Mimik – There’s more to Acting than Words and Facials

English Version follows German.

New York:  Mr. Blobby on Noel’s New York House Party

I’m loving it, I’m loving it! It’s the happiest I’ve ever been in my life! This guy’s a legend.“ (Ich liebe es!

Mr Blobby & Gary Davies.

English Version

There’s more to Acting than Words and Facials
(I know, facials are face treatments, I just didn’t want the title to get too long. I meant Facial Expressions of course.)

So today I won’t write about sad statistics, but rather about something very funny and very beautiful. Let’s talk about Mr. Blobby (and look at four episodes from his TV appearances)!
Mr. Blobby is probably not known in Germany (and most other countries on the globe) but he is an icon of BBC television history. He and his career are described in some detail in the BBC Wiki, just a short quote from there:
Mr. Blobby was a character on Noel Edmonds‘ Saturday night variety television show Noel’s House Party, portrayed by Barry Killerby. A bulbous pink figure covered with yellow spots, he sported a permanent toothy grin and jiggling eyes, and communicated only by saying the word „blobby“ in an electronically altered voice, expressing his moods through tone of voice and repetition.
Mr. Blobby’s history goes beyond that, they established him as the star of a (fictituous) children’s programme, where he would try out and learn lots of stuff from celebrities, he was taught a little rugby by professional Will Carling for example. His single „Mr. Blobby“ sold over 1 million copies and topped the UK charts at Christmas 1993.

Unfortunately I have not received an official photo of Mr. Blobby from the BBC so far, therefore I had to draw him. This is what he looks like (a bit):
MrBlobbyNoel Edmonds (host of the show that Mr. Blobby appeared in) would always treat him very badly I would say, here’s an example: Noel Edmons was planning on going to New York, Mr. Blobby started packing to go along, but was not allowed to do so:  Mr. Blobby
What I love about this scene – although it is a very sad one of course – is how Mr. Blobby is surrendering physically to his emotions. Despite his wide grin his sadness can be grasped, without the corners of his mouth turning down or him pulling faces (I am certainly not advocating the use of Botox though!).

Fortunately this story had a happy ending, Mr. Blobby did go to New York eventually:  Mr. Blobby on Noel’s New York House Party

I love physical acting and I am very happy for each film that only works when you watch it, because not everything is being said or described in the dialogue.

Mr. Blobby of course is a character from the last century, when men wore pink and likeable women were allowed to be overweight on screen without that being a topic (look at the queen of his heart Mrs Blobby). But most of all Mr. Blobby is a really cool chap and it really lifts your spirits watching scenes from his old shows. (well, mine at least). I strongly and warmly recommend getting to know Mr. Blobby to everyone.
Enjoy! And have a good start into a happy new week.

Oh, just one more!
On September 23rd 2012 Mr. Blobby was surprise guest in „The Big Fat Quiz of the 90s“ (Channel 4), presenting three bonus questions in the end. Panelist Dara Ó Briain (Irish stand-up comedian and TV presenter) commented: „I’m loving it, I’m loving it! It’s the happiest I’ve ever been in my life! This guy’s a legend.“

Update on January 4 2015: Once Mr. Blobby investigated the making of a radio show, here we see him in the studio with DJ Gary Davies. I particularly enjoy the way he is dancing to the jingles! Mr Blobby & Gary Davies.
