English Version

The Top 100 German Films 2014 – Checking 8 Team Positions

(Figures at the end of the text)

While the Berlinale Berlin International Film Festival was still going on, the German Federal Film Board FFA published the Cinema data for 2014, e.g. the number of admissions (121.7 Mio.), trips to the cinema and money spent on a ticket per person (1.51 / 12.17 €), the average admission price (8.05 €), the number of auditoriums / screens (4.637), the number of admissions to German films (32.1 Mio.) and so on. Also they publish the international ranking list (position 1: THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES, and on 5th position the highest German film: DER MEDICUS / THE PHYSICIAN) and the German productions ranking list (position 1: DER MEDICUS obviously, position 2: VATERFREUDEN (couldn’t find the international title), position 3 FACK JU GÖHTE with 1,712,275 admissions in 2013 and 7,334,548 admissions since the film premiered, maybe you remember that the film was topping both the German and the international ranking list in 2013. These ranking lists are based on solid facts – as opposed to the quite controversional and unreliable TV rating lists. I think this problem is global. Anyway, the sold tickets are reported to the FFA by all 1,630 German cinemas. In my text I am only writing about the Top 100 German films of 2014. The table shows the distribution according to genres (as suggested by the FFA), some of which were summarized by me (e.g. the documentaries).Kino2014_Genre_enSome general comments: The already mentioned Position 1 Film DER MEDICUS / THE PHYSICIAN was categorized as History. Among the top 20 films we find 6 designated children’s films (3 adventure, 2 fantasy / fairy tale and 1 comedy: PETTERSSON & FINDUS – KLEINER QUÄLGEIST, GROSSE FREUNDSCHAFT at position 16 (no English title to be found, but maybe you know the Swedish children’s books PETTSON OCH FINDUS by Sven Nordquist). Other films among the top 20: 1 sport documentary (DIE MANNSCHAFT / THE TEAM), 1 fantasy / fairy tale for grown-ups (SAPHIRBLAU / SAPPHIRE at position 20), 1 thriller (WHO AM I – KEIN SYSTEM IST SICHER / WHO AM I – NO SYSTEM IS SAFE, position 13) and 1 war film (MONUMENT MEN, position 19 – surprisingly a UK-German co-production without any US-money). Comedies and dramas were the predominant genres in 2014, but they are not on the same audience level. Among the top 20 there are 10 comedies, the highest ranked drama is on position 23 (LOVE, ROSIE – FÜR IMMER VIELLEICHT), as the only among the top 30 – as opposed to 15 comedies. Female directors were responsible for 5 comedies (highest position: 6) and 6 dramas (highest position 50), 2 documentaries and 2 children’s films / adventure (not considering shared directing). The share of female directors in 2014 was 17,4 %, in 2013 it was 18,8 % and in 2012 it was 23,9 %. But let’s not only look at directing but at a total of 8 team positions. I have evaluated the shares of women for directing, script, production, camera, production design, costume design, editing and sound, as well as the gender of the first role on the casting sheets.

The source I mainly used for this evaluation was filmportal, additonal information came from crew united and one position from IMDB. Finally I contacted about 10 production companies for the missing people. One task was gathering all the filmmakers’ names, the other was determining whether they are male or female, e.g. with names like Uli, Preethep, Tong und Idil. But I succeeded in the end. (Actually the German version of this text is a bit more elaborate as I write about problems encountered, if anybody is interested in this let me know, then I will also translate it).

Four comments on the documentaries:

  1. Here of course not all team positions always existed, e.g. costume design (this goes for animated films as well of course)
  2. In 2014 there were either landscape / country documentaries (e.g. RHEINGOLD – GESICHTER EINES FLUSSES – a film about the rhine in position 74) or documentaries about men (Snowden, Beltracchi, Nowitzki, men’s football national team / world champions). Why? Did no one shoot a documentary about a woman? Or did they just not make it into the Top 100? And if so, why? Did they have less copies and less money for advertising? Are films about women boring?
  3. The documentary MITTSOMMERNACHTSTANGO / MIDSUMMERNIGHT’S TANGO (director: Viviane Blumenschein) is „about the alleged origins of tango dance. The filmmakers are accompanying three passionate Argentinian tango musicians to Finnland. Filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki has claimed that the true roots of tango lie in Finnland – and if there is some truth in that is something that the men from South America want to find out now“ (filmportal.de). On the website of the film 8 men and 1 woman are named as the cast. So what is the sideline of this film? That tango as a dance with a partner is really men’s business alone?
  4. We find a similar phenomenon in the German-Austrian documentary ALPHABET: This film „looks for the origins of the modern educational system and is questioning its impacts. (…) The ideals of economy like e.g. competitiveness and meeting standards are transferred to the school system.“ (filmportal.de). 7 men and 1 woman are interviewed. Why? Is it because Erwin Wagenhöfer (b. 1961), who is responsible for directing, script (concept), camera and (with two others) editing, really could not find any female experts on education, female researchers on education, female educationalists or female chief human resources officers – or did he simply not look for them)

.

The evaluations you find in the following figures:

  • Percentages shares of women and men for 8 team positions and the first role oof the cast. As a reference share of women for the professional associations and the data base of crew united
  • 15 films by female directors, 82 films by male directors: shares of women for the other 7 positions.
  • 12 films by female producers (only or by the majority), 60 films by only male producers: shares of women for the other 7 positions.
  • Directing own or someone else’s script by female and male directors, percentaged
  • Gender of first role of cast (percentaged) in relation to script writers and directors. Reference: shares of women for first roles for all top 100 films.

Once again the low shares of women for script (26.9 %) and editing (26.8 %) are noteworthy, and the disproportionally higher share of male costume designers (18.5 %). Is this a result of men’s networks? Or is it that female editors and female writers are less eligible for top films? The female-male-ratio for the first roles of the casts is once again quite alarming, being 1 to 1,75.

There are 57 films (9 by women, 48 by men) where the directors were involved in the script writing, among these 24 films (6 by women, 18 by men) where there is only one director and one writer, typical author’s films. On top of that 4 films with co-direction where there is some sort of involvement from a director in the writing. So in reverse this means that there were only 39 films where the directors worked on scripts by others. I would assume that this ratio is the other way around for television, i.e. less directors working on their own scripts, but that is something to investigate on another day.

  • The probability of being hired to direct an ,unknown ckript’ was 3 times higher for male than for female directors.
  • The chance of there being a female first role on the cast was the highest if there was a female script writer (not a female director).

These last two conclusions are documented by the films from 2014, but of course to be handled with care, because this is only statistical talk.
